| Distribution | Widespread in the Amazon basin, usually downstream of first rapids. A similar if not the same species occurs in the Orinoco system. The fish on the left was offered for sale under the junior synonym of Piramutana piramuta, although it appears to be a different species possibly even genus from the Orinoco fish.
