| Etymology | Ictalurus: From the Greek ichthys, meaning fish, and ailouros, meaning cat; literally "fish cat" (=catfish). The specific epithet lupus means wolf. But, it is unclear why this name was chosen as this species does not have any outward lupine qualities - perhaps it is in reference to its feeding habits or other pack like behaviour. |
