Etymology Greek, brachys, eia = short + Greek, platys = flat + Greek, stoma = mouth.

Size 581mm (22.9") SL. Find near, nearer or same sized spp.
Identification Brachyplatystoma capapretum is characterized by its fine, densely spaced outer jaw teeth and relatively few rows of straight, depressible inner teeth. Juveniles are marked by bold, large (twice or more times the diameter of the eye) dark brown or gray spots centred above lateral line. Adults are abruptly counter shaded near the lateral line and have exceptionally dark pigmentation dorsally, especially along posterior half of body. Ventrally they are plain white to dusky cream. The Caudal fin of adults is moderately to shallowly forked with its lobes being broad and nearly equal.
General Remarks Maximum reported weight of 32.7kg.

Distribution South America: Amazon River from Belém, Brazil upriver to at least Iquitos, Peru, and several large tributary rivers and lakes including Trombetas, Madeira, Negro, Manacapuru, Purus, Tefé, Juruá, Jutaí, and Içá.
