| Identification | Hypoptopoma are small(ish) loricariids with a stocky body with a wide, flattened, head with the eyes on the side of the head and a concave profile, with a normal (not extremely thin) tail. Can be reasonably easily identified by taking a head-on macro-photo of the snout. This will show a very narrow, just a hairs width, band along the edge of the snout. This line on the snout is only found in H. inexspectatum; it is also the only species known from Paraguay. |
