| Etymology | Micracanthicus is derived from the Greek mikros, meaning small, and acanthicus, the name of the suprageneric clade of which this genus is hypothesized to be a basal member. The species epithet vandragti is a patronym honoring Randy Van Dragt, Professor of Biology at Calvin College since 1981, whose patient introductions to tropical ecology and fish ecomorphology benefitted the first author immeasurably. |
