Type Locality Colombia: Amazonas, Amazon River at 2 to 3 miles upstream from Leticia.
Pronunciation hi POP toe po mah
Etymology Hypoptopoma is derived from hypos (low position, below). piptein (depressed). poma (cheek) The specific epithet bianale is a reference to the presence of two anal plates (Latin bi, meaning "two"; latin analis, from anal).

Size 54mm (2.1") SL. Find near, nearer or same sized spp.
Identification Hypoptopoma are small(ish) loricariids with a stocky body with a wide, flattened, head with the eyes on the side of the head and a concave profile, with a normal (not extremely thin) tail.

Hypoptopoma bianale is distinguished from all congeners by presence of two medial anal plates (vs. single medial anal plate in all other species of Hypoptopoma).
