Scientific Name Hemibagrus punctatus  (Jerdon, 1849)     
Common Name(s) Nilgiri 'Mystus', Porthole Bagrid
Type Locality Cauvery River and its principal tributaries, south India.
Synonym(s) Bagrus punctatus, Macrones punctatus, Mystus punctatus
Pronunciation HEM ee BAG russ - punk tah tuss
Etymology From the Greek hemi- meaning half and bagrus, the catfish genus. The specific epithet comes from the Latin punctum, meaning spot. In reference to the row of black spots on the side of the body.

Size 400mm (15.7") SL. Find near, nearer or same sized spp.
Identification Easily distinguished by a row of small black spots along the lateral line.
Sexing Males have an elongate gential papilla in front of the anal fin.

Distribution Cauvery River drainage in southern India.

Feeding Readily eats all manner of live and prepared foods. Will eat smaller fishes.
Furniture Provide plenty of driftwood as hiding places.
Compatibility Territorial and aggressive. Should be kept by itself, as tankmates that are too big to be eaten will be viciously attacked.
Breeding Not reported.

Registered Keepers (1) CFC (k: 2), who also notes: "Not as aggressive as other Hemibagrus species but still very hostile toward smililar shaped catfishes. The male and female pair i keep are for the most part tollerent of each other but occasionally will break into bouts of fighting and chasing aro", (2) ichhater, (3) CatfishPownage63.
