| Etymology | The generic name comes from the Latin neo, meaning new and -tropius an ending commonly appended to schilbeid genera (when the genus was described as a schilbeid; this is probably derived from the Latin tropis, meaning keel, in reference to the compressed body of the fish). The specific name comes from the Greek atherine, meaning smelt, and the suffix -oides, meaning having the form of, in reference to the passing resemblance to smelt. |
