|Cat-eLog Data Sheet|
|Scientific Name||Ictalurus lupus (Girard, 1858)|
|Type Locality||Headwaters of Rio Pecos, Texas, U.S.A.|
|Pronunciation||ick tal oo russ - loo pus|
|Etymology||Ictalurus: From the Greek ichthys, meaning fish, and ailouros, meaning cat; literally "fish cat" (=catfish). The specific epithet lupus means wolf. But, it is unclear why this name was chosen as this species does not have any outward lupine qualities - perhaps it is in reference to its feeding habits or other pack like behaviour.|
|Size||450mm (17.7") SL. Find near, nearer or same sized spp.|
|Identification||Greatly resembles a small channel catfish, however, body lacks spots and the caudal fin is not deeply forked, the base of the anal fin is longer than the head length.|
|General Remarks||Fishbase lists 480 mm TL.|
|Distribution||North America: USA to Rio Grande drainage including Pecos River system in southeast New Mexico and Devils River in southern Texas; also in northeastern Mexico.
