blackhawker,

Here is the outlet I use on my Eheim 2217 filters. Far superior to spray bars. I use the 5/8 inch diameter return.
http://www.drsfostersmith.com/product/p ... catid=1313

I prefer to have at least 8 to 12 tank volumes of a filter rate gph flow rate. More is not necessary nor is a detriment. In any case their caves and your design layout should use some wood and/or rock to create some quieter zones.
In addition to the filter I recommend running one air stone. Keeping the water as close to it dissolved oxygen(DO) levels as possible for a given temperature is important and the canister filters alone do not accomplish that. The warmer the water the lower the potential DO. Most of the interesting plecos seem to be warm water species like all the Hypancistrus species to cite an example.

Re: Corydoras hastatus fry

Dave,

I think the fry do better when allowed to remain in the larger permanent tank with good Hornwort growth because the environment is far more complex and ecologically stable. The water life has established checks and balances among the various microbiological life forms, has much more stable and well oxygenated water. The microorganisms provide important sources of their first foods. On top of that, this species does own predate its own eggs or larvae. I raised an incredible 400+ of Corydoras hastatus in a just less than 3 years beginning with only 10 wild caught adults. Sold 300 and kept 100(approximately.) I retained a group of about 100 for restarting the breeding colony on short notice.
There is no risk of damaging the eggs from changing their environment nor handling which may cause losses that would not have occurred otherwise, too. The smaller incubation containers are subject to variations in temperature and degraded water quality that the larger established tank does not. The bottom line is that colony breeding works extremely well for Corydoras hastatus and it has the added benefit of being very productive while only using a single 20 long aquarium. I found the 20 Long to be the ideal size tank. I tried to use a 35 gal tank but it was less successful. I think for many larvae do better in water that is not too deep. I found this to be especially true of the Sturisoma aureum I breed. The depth is not a factor for any plecos I have bred but they produce very well developed fry which are quite large when they leave the cave. The 35 gal was 36 X 12 X 18H inches. This single colony tank makes everything very easy. All you need to do is harvest enough salable sized C. hastatus to prevent excessive overcrowding. Both the fry and adults thrive on Artemia nauplii and some live worms and frozen blood worms. Even the fry eat the earth worm sticks which soften to a mush in a short time.

BTW, Corydoras hastatus mature at an early age. I have seen 4 month old males join in the mating frenzy with the older males and females may begin laying eggs in as little as 5 months old.

Re: Breeding Leporacanthicus sp. cf galaxias L-240

I want to share what just happened to one of my L240 females as a warning to everyone who keeps Leporacanthicus species.

One of the females was sitting unsheltered in the middle of my tank. From the coloring I could see that she was cyanotic. A small strip of cod fillet was visible in her mouth (I gave my fish strips of cod fillet today.) She obviously tried to get it out, but she couldn't. Because of her poor condition I could easily catch her, and pull out the 4x1cm strip of fish with my fingers. After returning to the tank she hyperventilated for a while, got the black base color back and swam into hiding.

When she was choking her base color was reddish/grey.

I wonder how to safely continue feeding my fish with fillets. Maybe I should use whole fillets for them to chew and scrape from or finely chop the fillets? Do any of you use fish fillets?

Are these the T. galeatus Paraguay from Ruinemans?! They've been listed for ages but I didn't dare to order them (I already have enough galeatus). Your pictures truly make me doubt. I may give them a try after all - hope the LFS has to order next week. Only 11 specimens left....

I'm very confused! I bought 2 otocinclus from my LFS last weekend and they have settled in nicely, but they seem to be harassing some of my other fish - in particular they seem to be trying to eat my sucking loach and have been biting the tail of a platy. I thought these fish were algae eaters, any idea what is going on? I have checked with the photos on this site of otocinclus vittatus, and they are definitely what I have.

Bucket List

Actually, my earlier post got me thinking along the lines of the film: what would you have on your bucket list (things to do before you die for those that haven't seen it). Some of mine, completed and not:

1. Go collecting in the Amazon system
2. Catch a fish over 200lbs, preferably a big sturgeon
3. Swim with a whale shark (done)
4. Dive with manta rays (done)
5. Dive with requiem sharks (nearly done, but they didn't stay to play)
6. A bungee jump (don't know if I have the b*lls really)
7. A parachute jump (ditto!)

I'll add some others when I think of them.
Her tail is shorter and was maybe damaged at some point but she moves around the tank with no trouble AND I have no interest in breeding especially since I was told it was a male I asked if they ever get females and the store guy told me that they only send them males because they don't want anyone breeding them...

Dutchfry, Thank you, I didn't know that they don't grow back damaged fins but I was never any good with perfection so the little stubby is still cute. Resale value = zero, cuteness score = ten

Had no intention of having this type of fish ever but it was alone in the tank and what a face. Since I'd never seen one before I didn't know it was missing the tip of it's tail so I got the fish I wanted I suppose. It's from SA so it fits into my community SA tank nicely.

Now the real questions: I was told that it was no trouble keeping a male by itself, is this true for keeping a lone female?
Food: The shrimp pellets sink too fast, the FD brineshrimp float and get gobbled up by the hatchets and it hasn't touched the veg or algae tabs. What should I be feeding to make sure it gets some? So far she nibbles on 'stuff' on the leaves and either cleaned or ate cory eggs?

It's hard to find any info because everything I've found is about breeding them, not so much about just enjoying them. I read they live 2-3 years, is that right? And finally, can I keep other single Dwarf c*****ds from the amazon in with her? If I find some other small peaceful species.

Thanks

I would have thought that Australian peach is about the same as in America, yes. And I'm pretty sure I've tried it before now. It's not something I commonly keep in the fruit-bowl, so it's unlikely to end up in the fish-tank for that reason, but yes, why not. I have been known to feed them Mango fruit - and they really like that.
Yes, These are those Sturgeon. 1200 lb fish were caught a hundred years ago that were 12 feet long. It is doubtful if any of those are left. They can live to be over 100 years old, though. The fish hatchery near Bonneville Dam on the Lower Columbia River used to have some 8'-8" brood stock on display in some ponds.
Our Sturgeon fishing in Lower Hell's Canyon of the Snake River is famous. Good holes are within 25 miles of my place. Most people use jet sled boats to run the rapids further up river to fish for them.

An arowana will get close to a meter, say 3 feet, so I think Matts is rather optimistic suggesting 2-3 feet

Asian Arowanas might get only 2 feet, but these are much more agressive than the americans are. A friend of mine once tried an Asian arowana of 1 foot with very tough central American c*****ds - Parachromis, Amphilophus species, that kind of species.

It got all the c*****ds sheltered within 24 hrs.

So Asian Arowana are not suit4eble for any combination, and the americans? I would say in a 4*2 meter footprint tank, with a large area above the water.

No less, and therefore I think arowanas are even less suitable for a tank than redtail catfish (which only require water, after all)

Latex modified concrete is extremely impermeable and only needs a brief dip in diluted Muriatic acid to neutralize the exposed surfaces enough to have little effect on water chemistry. Be sure to rinse immediately with a sodium bicarbonate solution to stop/neutralize the acid reaction. It is sticky stuff to work with. Typically used on bridge pavement resurfacing projects because it resists deicing salt penetration. Make a zero slump mix for greater ease of hand molding and to have a higher density.
Cement/concrete will need to be sealed in some way to not allow it to leach hardness into the water. It's not terribly bad, but it will affect the pH of the water if untreated. If it's coated with a waterproof surface sealer, then it should be OK.
