otocinclus vittatus - eating other fish?

I'm very confused! I bought 2 otocinclus from my LFS last weekend and they have settled in nicely, but they seem to be harassing some of my other fish - in particular they seem to be trying to eat my sucking loach and have been biting the tail of a platy. I thought these fish were algae eaters, any idea what is going on? I have checked with the photos on this site of otocinclus vittatus, and they are definitely what I have.

Bucket List

Actually, my earlier post got me thinking along the lines of the film: what would you have on your bucket list (things to do before you die for those that haven't seen it). Some of mine, completed and not:

1. Go collecting in the Amazon system
2. Catch a fish over 200lbs, preferably a big sturgeon
3. Swim with a whale shark (done)
4. Dive with manta rays (done)
5. Dive with requiem sharks (nearly done, but they didn't stay to play)
6. A bungee jump (don't know if I have the b*lls really)
7. A parachute jump (ditto!)

I'll add some others when I think of them.

Anyone else?

my juvy's were at each other!

just today i forgot to turn off the tank lights and just decided to observe them
everything looked okay the adult commons stayed still for the rest of the time, my peppermint ancistrus hiding and looking out side of the driftwood then going back in, my cory's strangely eating the peach

btu 1 thing caught my eye, my too 4-5cm juvy ancistrus were attackign each other! i didnt see spikes but saw head butting and side clashing (which probably does mean spikes). it was strange to see young 1's to go at each other.
is this because these maybe males? (too small to tell) pecking order? then i saw after the fight the little 1 attacking the male double its size! i found this kind of hilarious though (the little 1 attacking the bigger 1 not the little ones fight). the male just stayed in his position as the little thing just kept attacking him from behind which soon led to the male being annoyed and just left and started eating the peach. then the little 1's went at each other again.
can anyone tell me what this means?

Sterbai colouration

Hi all, first post here!

I added three Sterbai to my tank about six months ago. They settled in really quickly and are brilliant fun. However I always thought that they looked a bit dark in colour compared to photos of Sterbai on the internet. Their colour is as though there's more of the dark on them than the light bits, if that makes sense!

Yesterday I added two more Sterbai to my tank. These ones are a bit bigger than the original three and their colour is really vibrant, like they normally are in photographs.

The original three were tiny when they went in and still aren't mature. Is the dark colouration due to their immaturity? Or is it just genes?

Water parameters are Ammonia 0, Nitrite 0, Nitrate always below 10, pH 7.5, temp 25. They're fed every night on either red astax crumb, shrimp pellets, Hikari sinking wafers or frozen blood worm. So I don't think it should be their environment or diet that's keeping them dark.

Any ideas? I love them no matter what the colour but I would prefer them to be more vibrant in colour.

Thanks

Kosher Salt vs. "Aquarium" Salt vs. ???

I have seen several different books, web sites, et cetera recommend adding varying levels of salt to tanks, usually either 1 Tsp/gallon, or 1 Tbs/5 gallons (depending on who's doing the writing). I have seen Aquarium salt for sale at every LFS in town and one even has cups with perforated lids in every freshwater tank to show that they use what they recommend. Someone else told me that Kosher salt works just as well (for an eighth of the money) and someone else even told me that culinary sea salt works pretty well (but ends up being more expensive than the Aquarium salt).

I generally try to avoid any kind of additional chemicals in my tanks, figuring that simpler is better, both in ease and cost of maintenance and stress on the fish. I do use Kosher salt, though, because I have read in numerous sources that it is a stress reducer (a tonic) for the fish.

Is there much of a difference? I know not to use iodized salt (even though one aquarium book I found, Color Treasury of AQUARIUM FISH (Crescent, 1972) recommends "table salt" for several fish) and I have had good luck with the Kosher salt. Would I have any worthwile improvement if I changed to using aquarim salt? What harm would come from using iodized salt? I can't imagine it would be good for the fish, but would it be genuinely bad for them?

Is one method of adding it better than another? In my 18-gallon tank, I mix it in well with the new water when I change the water. In my wife's goldfish tank, I add the salt to the main chamber of the HOB filter (Marineland Penguin 150). So far, all is well, but am I missing something?

I also tend to use lighter amounts (generally 1Tbs/5 Gallons). Should I be using more? Or is less better? The cats in the tank are corydoras aeneas and parotocinclus jumbo. I also have sailfin mollies (which like brackish water), and tetras (which, I understand, don't).

sought cats, bought apisto..

Corydoras hastatus fry

I have had a few batches of hastatus now but somehow seem to struggle raising them, they dont seem to be very active feeders.
I remove the eggs, most of them attached to floating plastic plants/java fern, and place them in a plastic container. Most hatch fine. The tubs have a large daily water change. They are fed on fine crumb dry foods.

Just to add, I have raised loads of Corydoras pygmaeus successfuly in the exact same way, and several other cory species. It just seems as if the hastatus need some other stimulant to become active and feed. Maybe the addition of other fry species if available?

I recently got a group of 5 C. weitzmani, but having a little trouble with the feeding.

i have tried feeding them earthworm sticks, Hikari sinking wafers, Hikari algae wafers and frozen bloodworms. They seem to be only interested in the bloodworms and some interest for the earthworm sticks.

any advice on what type of diet they need? I am assuming they are not carnis?

Future feature?? Distribution per genus?

I just thought it would be a good idea to list all occurrence records for all species in a particular genus - in order of the body-of-water tree, so you get all the species in the Amazon in one lump, the ones in the Orinoco in another, etc.

I'm sure I could create that at some point. I just wanted to mention it here to discuss and remind ourselves it is something that would be useful [I think, at least].

Of course, we can achieve something similar by searching the cat-elog in the advanced search, but let's say we have a fish exported from Peru, and we want to see what Ancistrus are likely to come from rivers in Peru [I'm assuming the person knows this, as "search by country" still isn't available in the Cat-eLog (and it's made complicated by the fact that a river may run through several countries)].

Strange woodcat

I bought 4 small woodcats at Castleford's auction yesterday. I'll try and get some pics up soon. The biggest is about 3.5 inches and I am told by the previous owner that he has had them for some time. Looking at the thickness and roughness of the pectoral and dorsal fin spines I would guess that they are adults.

At first glance they look like a Trachelyopterus sp but they have a white ventral area, similar to Tatia and Centromochlus, but the head seems too broad for them, and the caudal the wrong shape. The dorsal spine is very short, broad and has prominent granulations. The pec spines are thickened and also have the prominent granulations. I'm thinking it could be a Glanidium sp, or an as yet unseen dwarf Trachycorystes (if such a thing exists). It may be a Glanidium melanopterum as (from memory) they look similar to this:

http://lfsi.sites.uol.com.br/Glanidium_melanopterum.jpg

But from memory I don't think they had the modified anal fin that exists in Glanidium, Tatia and Centromochlus.

New Cathorops

Marceniuk, AP, R Betancur-R, A Acero P, 2009. A new species of Cathorops (Siluriformes; Ariidae) from Mesoamerica, with redescription of four species from the eastern Pacific. Bulletin of Marine Science 85: 245–280.

Abstract

The great similarities in the external morphologies and the lack of knowledge on ontogenetic and intersexual differences of species in the ariid genus Cathorops Jordan and Gilbert, 1882, has led to an abundance of misidentifications, causing great nomenclatural instability. Accordingly, the taxonomic statuses of the Cathorops species described from Eastern Pacific have remained controversial in the literature, even in recent studies. Here, we describe Cathorops raredonae, a new species from Mesoamerica (Mexico to El Salvador) and redescribe (in Cathorops) Tachysurus liropus Bristol, 1897, and Arius taylori Hildebrand, 1925, often listed as junior synonyms of Cathorops fuerthii (Steindachner, 1877) and Cathorops steindachneri (Gilbert and Starks, 1904), respectively, or treated as species inquirendae in Cathorops. We also redescribe and redefine the circumscriptions of C. fuerthii and C. steindachneri. Finally, we summarize current statuses of nominal species of Cathorops from the Eastern Pacific and provide an artificial key to identify the valid Pacific species

Cory Adolfi - Help Wanted

The tank specs / water are ok.
I am not sure if he is ill or it is his age, I have had him for almost 18 months. In that time none of the adolfi have been ill, always thought they were very tough wee fish.
The other adolfi are ok.
Any suggestions etc greatly appreciated.

how to lower pH to blackwater levels and keep it there?

All of you guys and girls who have experience with blackwater species, here is the question of the day for you: how to acheive a ph of about 5.5 and keep it stable?

I have heard: peat filtration, indian almond leaves, pressurized CO2 injection, etc.

tank is 2 gal nano, planted tank
HOT 3 stage filter
GH approx 100-120, average
KH approx 1-2 (residual, no buffer added)
pH approx 7.5, average
NH3-, NH4, NO2, NO3 all 0, average
50% water change weekly

I know that if I can add enough CO2 to drop the pH to 6.0 at KH of 1 or less that the CO2 concentration would be about 15+ mg/L (ideal). I prefer not to have to rig it up to my CO2 tank on my large system b/c I would have to move the tank...any ideas??

I just set up tanks this summer to breed cory's and angels.
My bronze cory's (7 in a 29 gal) started laying eggs the first part of November and have spawned every 2 days since.
I have been transferring the eggs(some on glass panes and some cut from the sides of tank) to a 10 gal tank and doing 50% change daily with methyl blue at full strength. Eggs hatch in 3 days and fry seem to be free swimming in a day or two.
Problem is some of the fry are getting so large they seem to be disturbing the newly hatched and the books say to leave the mulm in the tank, but I wonder how long I can get away with thet at this pace.
Has anybody experienced cory's to keep spawning and how long should I expect it to continue.

Common Pleco v Sailfin Pleco

Hi all,

I've come over from the pfk forum to get some advice. Matsp speaks highly of this forum.

My little local pet store has a 'pl*co' in their tropical tank. It's a tiny little thing, probably 2" full length. I've decided to move a little into tropicals so thought I'd keep this in a 28L tank until the new year (when it will have a much bigger tank).

I only glimpsed the fish and having done some research, I'm pretty certain it's either a common or a sailfin. The full grown size is 60cm and 30cm respectively (I believe?), so if it's a common I will probably have to leave it. Not sure I will be able to get a 1000L tank any time soon, so it would be unfair to purchase it (although I daren't consider the tank it will end up in).

Basically, my question is: how do I know the difference in a 2" fish? Is it obvious? I have printed off some photos to compare and thought I'd take these with me tomorrow.

Thanks guys

Corruscans confirmation?

Hi all.

I was offered & purchased this fish around 2 yrs ago.
It was sold to me as Pseudoplatystoma Corrruscans.
It has alot more spots than my Tiger shovelnose (fascinatum) but just wanted to know if anyone on here could confirm that it is a Corrusscans.

Many thanks.

Irregular caves preferred over symmetrical caves?

I'm in middle of doing some DIY caves out of acrylic pieces

due to my workmanship- I have noticed that all of my caves had something in common- they're all lopsided like trapeziods or something of that manner

was wondering if the plecos wouldn't mind that or would that even give me an advantage over straight cube, straight rectangular or whatever cave that's made out of clay and slate?

Brief review of Fitor Tanganyika book needed

I am contemplating to order the Fitor coffee-table book on Tanganyika, but before I splash down a chunk of change for it, I would like to know from those already with a copy if there are decent catfish photos in the book.

If you don't know what I'm talking about, it's this book.

Cíchlids are nice and all, but give me catfish!

Riparium setup for Synodontis petricola

Hi all, I am new member here. I don't know much about catfish systematics or ecology or anything, but I have kept a few as community fish in aquaria. I have decided to get a little more serious and set up a species tank, and that's how I ended up on PlanetCatfish.com. This looks like a cool site.

I just placed an order for a group of Synodontis petricola and they should get here in just a day or two. I hope to set them up in a healthy and engaging display with live plants. I have a few different ideas in mind for putting it together. Most of my display tanks are ripariums, so they feature emergent plants rooted into hanging and/or floating planters. This 120-gallon tank that I put together for some Mexican poecilid and goodeid livebearers is an example of how these ripariums look.

That one also gives an idea of what I have in mind for this new setup. Most of the ripariums that I have set up have also included underwater plants, but I want this one to emphasize the S. petricola, along with some well-chosen stones and gravel substrate. So, it will only have plants in the above-water area. I am not really trying to recreate any specific biotope and I might also include a small shoal of a wild-type Poecilia (a New World fish) as something to swim around in the upper levels of the tank. I have a few specific plant ideas and I'll come back with another post to explain those too.

I am excited to see those fish. I hope that they will travel well.
