Re: Blue Eye Pleco Paradise

Really nice looking tank, but you also should want to take into consideration the needs/wants of the fish when designing a set up. I agree with the above posts that you should have a sand substrate, and some hiding places for the Blue Eyes and Ancistrus. This should not be seen as a set back, but as...

Re: Rare Aquatics

Hiya Nick,
This is Martin Hutton.
All those fish I got from you recently have settled in really well, in fact the Rasboras look like they might breed.
Did you ever find out if you could get hold of Ancistrus Claro?
I'm also interested in getting some small L200 Hemis if you ever come across them.

Re: tank recommdations please.

I have got my tank problem sorted. My lfs made me a great deal on a Juwel Rio 240 tank. This will do me until I have time to get a custom built tank made, and then the Juwel will go onto my breeding shelves. I get it tomorrow so I am excited about setting it up. thanks for your replies. happy days, ...

Hiya, I have just had to break down my Roma 200 tank due to it having developed some condensation drips at the outside corners. It seems that there is a manufactoring fault with this model of tank. I have been offered a replacement tank, or my money back. I wonder if any of you could help me out by ...

Re: The right L for my planted low tech tank?

I had a lo tech tank running for a while. Great for the plants, but in order to get the right balance it needed very heavy planting, and very low fish stocking. I was trying to get the plants to take care of cleaning the water for me,(as I believe is possible) resulting is fewer water changes. I hav...

Re: Deciding on a new tank to buy

This is an interesting thread. Heres my input; If buying a kit, have a good look at the lid to see how easy it will be to carry out tank cleaning etc. I have a Jewul Rekord 96, and to get to the filter you need to remove the whole lid, which I found to be a bit of extra hassle that I dont need. I re...

Re: How to catch a cory

I had a lone C.Pygmaeus in a planted tank. The only way I found to move him was to take out everything that could be moved, including heater and filter inlet/outlet. Then using one net to chase him into the open, and another to catch him. It was easy once everything was out. I then took it as a chan...

Re: question about ancistrus eggs

I agree, leave to eggs alone, the male will look after them.
Some time Ancistrus can spawn totally un notived. The first thing you know about it is when you see small ones swimming about the tank.
Male ancistrus are very good fathers.

warning about Juwel lights!

If you are thinking of buying a Juwel Tank here is a bit of a warning; I have a Juwel Rekord 96, about 2 years old. The starter switch, (not the on/off, but that small white cartridge thing), has stopped working. a new tube lighting switch costs about £2, but with the Juwel Rekord 96 everything is b...

Re: Planaria bloom/outbreak. Any advice/suggestions/help?

Hiya, I seem to have these creatures under control now, (fingers crossed). They were not really free swimming, more being blown about by the filter outlet. I have cleaned the filter out, but when I took it apart, it was really quite clean anyway. No sign of any worms living in there. I have put some...

Re: Planaria bloom/outbreak. Any advice/suggestions/help?

Hiya Richard, From that article, and my own observations, I think the Planaria must have been lving in the filter, and any that ventured into the old tank were eaten by the fish. Now I am researching what fish do the best job of keeping the plarania at bay. I was planning this new tank as a breeding...

Planaria bloom/outbreak. Any advice/suggestions/help?

Hiya, I have got an outbreak/bloom of what seems to be Planaria, I first noticed a snow storm of hundreds of very tiny, thread like worms, with some larger, (about 4 to 5 mm) worms on the glass. The odd thing is, this is a brand new tank! It has new rinsed playpit sand as substrate, and well soaked ...

I am having to rearrange some of my tanks, and would like to keep my 4 x P.Maccus along with 3 x LDA01s together in a 36" x 15' x 15" Tank. (something like 120/130litres). I am able to provide a large amount of wood, some bits with holes in, and also some ceramic caves. I am planning to ar...

Re: Wood problem.

I agree with the above posts; dont put the bleached wood into your tank. You want the wood to be a natural as possible. If you feel you need to, you could rinse it in hot water. You can use green wood if its oak or beech, peel the bark off, and just soak it until it sinks. Sometime it sinks after ab...

Re: Slate caves for LDA01.

Thanks for that reply Mat, I have considered using bamboo as I have heard they like it, and that the fry feed off the inside of the bamboo before becoming free swimming(?). I am a bit concerned that bamboo will rot in the tank. Have you used bamboo yourself? I will get some and put it in a bucket to...

Re: New tank! What do you think?

I dont think the previous comments about the tank being supported by the trunk, were refering to the strength of the trunk????? Most tanks are designed to be supported all the way across the bottom. If the weight, ( and when full, the water weights a lot) is pressing on too few areas, this can cause...

Re: New accidental owner needs urgent help.

Hiya, Well done on saving these fish. You should try to disturb the fish as little as possible when changing the water. Do not take them out of the tank everytime. There is no need to remove the gravel to rinse it. The gravel vac is a good idea. I would recommend that you get the filter installed as...

It could be argued that wild caught fish are actually better for the hobby. If people are catching fish for the aquarium industry, they will need to take a keen interest in their environment around them in order to maintain their livelyhood. If they are forced to seek employment elsewhere it is lik...
