Re: Need help with an ID
I would rather say this is since A. punctatus does not have the orange tinge to the spots on the tips of the pectoral fins.

Re: What is this small grey tiny dotted bargain bin pleco?
I'm not sure if chaetastoma are commercially bred at all? I know for sure that they can be bred in captivity. But it is rather hard and also requires luck more than anything else since they can also be very territorial and you have to get the conditions just right. Plus, they are readily available ...

This is most likely . Have a close look on it, they usually do not do well in fresh tanks.
Nice Tank.

A male . The real one.
I have never been able to find them anywhere. In the shops it's always the calico form of the common BN. If you have a good LFS ask them for Ancistrus spec. Violett.

Without a picture this is just guessing, but based on your description your fish could be or a similar rubbernose. These are pretty common in the trade.

Nice one. I'd say this is not L156. Too "dotted" and the tentacles should be branched. Do you know where this was caught?

Re: What kinds of cat fish for a 30 gallon?
At first I would get rid of the common pleco, your tank is way too small for it. Then get more Cories (of the same species), 4 isn't really a group. For a pleco that eats algae/wafers I'd go for a bristlenose Ancistrus cf_cirrhosus . They won't bust your tank, are easy to keep, available and come in...

Re: Mystery Pseuda - any ideas?
Just out of curiosity, do you have pictures of the older ones? It would be great if they retained this pattern, but L600 are still very nice fish (with the only disadvantage that they grow too large for my current tank ).

Re: Mystery Pseuda - any ideas?
I have seen pictures of similar "wormlike" markings on golden nuggets. However, follow-up pictures of the same fish showed that these markings disappeared and the fish showed the normal coloration when it was older(i.e. dots). I am very sure that this one is not leaving your house, correct...

Re: Whiptail Catfish ID
I don't know what species this is but I would say that it is a male. Notice the "hairs" on the pectoral fins. Also notice that this fish does have a "beard" which would definitely make it a male. If you're talking about the second picture then yes, this is a male (as it says in ...

Re: Whiptail Catfish ID
Yes, female due to the body shape and the absence of Odontodes. At this size the males are easy to identify.
H. beni are small, peaceful fish that are easy to keep and not at all timid. They are not that rare, so it should be possible for you to get some more if this is indeed H. beni.

I just used a clog to . The link works correctly, but the preview picture shows Peckoltia multispinis (the caption reads Ancistrus multispinis).

Re: BristleNose ID?
The listed size is standard length, i.e. the length from tip of the snout to the base of the tail. Based on your picture I'd say your female has a SL of about 4.5". Common BN are sold in huge numbers. Many are bred, but still loads are wildcaught. Over here basically any BN that is brown with l...

Re: l316
I really cannot help what fish these are. But "too small" isn't a good reason to exclude a species. When conditions are not like they should be (water too cold, wrong food, infrequent water changes etc.) the fish will be stunted. Have a look at all the Pangasius that are sold as pets. Ever...

Re: BristleNose ID?
Did you get both from the same batch? And since the shop told you that they are not common BN (why?), did they say what they are supposed to be? It is very unlikely that anyone will be able to ID your fish. There are about 150 Ancistrus species in the Cat-eLog here, and there are most likely a lot m...

Re: Armored catfish wreaking havoc in South Florida lakes
My cousin mentioned that peacock bass put up a great fight when hooked. Imagine hooking an arapaima with a fly rod. Ha! I once had a "behind the scenes" tour at the zoo and we got to feed the Arapaimas. Using roughly foot-long trout (which vere swallowed in whole). You'd need a VERY sturd...

Re: What is this?
If it's any concolation, L1 DOES stay a lot smaller than the common sailfin P. gibbiceps. I really don't know why nobody likes bristlenoses. For your tank have a look at Hypancistrus, Peckoltia or the smaller Panaque. Hypancistrus can be pretty but are rather nocturnal. I'd have a closer look at Pec...

Re: blue botia
Cloudy water usually is not the main problem. Many fish do not have a natural habitat with crystal clear water. The real problem with new tanks is nitrite which is invisible and highly toxic to the fish. The most important "cleaning" of the water is not done mechaically (i.e. by the sponge...

Re: blue botia
The zebras and the neon rainbowfish are the only ones that would do well in your tank sizewise. Least suited are actually the goldfish and the pleco. If your tank has been set up only ten days ago and you already put in all the fish without used filter material of suitable microorganisms (can you ge...

Re: dont know what or how much to feed
I am not saying that this fish isn't a blue botia, but over here at least it would be far more likely that a dark fish with bright red tail is a Epalzeorhynchos bicolor aka redtail shark. You can get them in virtually every fish shop. But the two are really easy to tell apart when you see the whole ...

Re: dont know what or how much to feed
If your fish looks similar to that one I'd hazard a guess at Pangasius. Do your "Cories" look anything like this? Pangasianodon hypophthalmus If they are I'd suggest taking tham back to the shop as they are not even remotely suited for a tank. Asking for a Cory and getting Pangasius is lik...

Re: Help Identify Whiptail Catfish please
Hi Don, sorry, I'd say it's a Hemi- or Rhineloricaria, but identifying Whiptails is really not my forte. It has been claimed that L10a was wildcaught and then bred in the GDR. But none have been caught ever since. I think this is a bred form, but based on what species I have no idea. I don't know ab...

The L10a you get in the shop are very often hybrids between the "real" red whiptails and . However, your whiptail doesn't look like H. lanceolata or a hybrid either.
