Re: Coolwater

I think the bigger issue is non-native fishes that survive in your climate. But a carefull keeper should not have this problem except when he uses an outside pond. In the Netherlands we have some issues with escaped aquatic species (mostly crayfish, but also Misgurnus anguillicaudatus). Truly native...

Re: A day in the life of Planet

Although a lumper, I still don't understand why the family Hypopthalmidae was reclassified and included in Pimelodidae. I have not seen many pictures of Hypopthalmidae and take it that scientists have found out that these fish have no internal fertilization (thus unable to fit into Auchenipteridae)...

And about the Mbandata. It is an unindentified Syno probably caught near Mbandata, congo. It is very similar to S decora but mine are still small. I will make pictures after I catch them for iidetification.

Re: Filter transplantation

Well, after Bas his comment I went ahead and just placed an airstone in the tank. The filter is now running in my new tank. And now I can only wait and see.

Thank you all for your usefull comments. Next time I will prepare myself better and buy a small sponge filter to do the job.

Filter transplantation

I recently moved in with my girlfriend and for a couple of reasons I decided to buy a new tank (325 litres in stead of 200 litres). Because the existing filter has enough capacity i wanted to keep using that one and place it on the new tank. The only problem is that my fish should still stay in the ...

Re: new congo tank

Nice, natural looking tank! How was your experience with the skittishness of the Alestopetersius? Mine (i have a shoal of 7 males and 5 females) are extremely skittish and dissappear in a small corner of the tank as soon as someone approaches the tank. A shame, since they are beautiful animals. The ...

Too bad. Unfortunaltely there is only a limited amount of time and space for the fishes. Maybe I should ask on some lesser specialised local fora.

Re: Newly Adopted & Ill Eupterus

Hi Goldenfeather, IIRC ammonia and ammonium are in a constant balance, ammonium turns into ammonia when the pH reaches above 7. And thus becomes poisonous. And most chemical tests measure both ammonia and ammonium because they are so similar and because of the balance. If you know the total value an...

Also a splitter (mostly). Even if different populations/species look the same they can be very different in ecology/behaviour. This is more visible in birds where some species are very difficult to distinguish visually, but are obviously different species (behaviour/song). These different species of...

Re: How to stop my maccus from eating the ram eggs

Thanks all for the quick replies. The rams are F1, the bred ones are plain ugly to me. I am familiar with the stories of eating the eggs when there is too much stress. But they they defend the eggs fierce against the Panaques, and wave fresh water at the eggs. After the light go out, the eggs disapp...

How to stop my maccus from eating the ram eggs

My rams spawn about every two weeks, but the eggs never last longer than one night. I am quite sure my 5 P. maccus are the caviar-thieves. Is there a way to save the eggs (without needing an extra aquarium)?

Thanks in advance,

Holland reached the finals in 1974 and 1978 and lost both. That's why a lot of dutch people love to see Germany in the finals. We have some revenge to take upon our bigger brother (preferably to win in the 90th minute).

Re: The Amazing Duckweed Filter.

Thanx,
As a plant ecologist I should know. But history learned me to value practical expertise. Especially Darrels remarks are useful. Especially the Lemna are very yellowish, maybe I should do a conductivity test.

Too bad an aquarium good for the fishes results in such ugly yellowish plants....

Re: The Amazing Duckweed Filter.

Lately both my Limnobium and my Lemna started to grow slow. I used to remove loads of these every week. Now I only need to remove them every few weeks. Does this mean my N is decreased, or are there other possible causes (and is my duckweed filter defunct)? Limnobium and Lemna are my only plants.
