Re: Lifetime of your fish
I've just lost my Synodontis notatus, bought as a fully grown adult ~9.5 years ago, it wouldn't surprise me if it was ~20 years but I don't recall the seller saying how old the fish was. Such a gentle giant, it shared a tank with my old group of Pencilfish for one night, before I slept very uneasily...

Re: Synodontis euptera, or something less common?
Absolutely gutted to report I found Troy and one of my Synodontis brichardi trio (female I think) dead last night just before bedtime, after being alerted something was wrong when another S. brichardi was desperately trying to stay at the water surface and my Distichodus group were gasping heavily. ...

Re: Deciding on catfish for African river tank
Thanks for the reply, sounds like you have a couple of interesting African tanks. I'm not far from you, the Euchilichthys guentheri especially sound interesting, did you find them locally? A lot of my African fish including the Euchilichthys came from Amazon Aquatics in Warminster, which sadly clos...

Re: Deciding on catfish for African river tank
My ~280l 4-foot long tank has had the following fish in Southampton's tap water for 7-10 years, sharing the same tank since at least 2012, roughly in order of where they spend time top to bottom... 1x ~4cm SL male Halfbeak (tank born during Italian F1 GP in 2012 iirc) 6/7(?)x ~6cm SL mix of female C...

Re: What is this catfish
To my amateur ID eye, it looks like a spotless version of my Synodontis congicus . I acquired mine from Wildwoods' online store via https://www.tropicalfishfinder.co.uk/shops-detail?id=54 , which was listed as a Synodontis notatus, back in 2011 IIRC. Lovely catfish that has grown from ~8cm Sl to ~10...

Oh wow so theyll stay pretty small then? My C. dorsale barely grew over the ~3 years, having acquired in at auction at ~4cm SL, it was ~5cm SL when it mysteriously passed away. My C. formosae (which comes from same area as above in wild) has now been with me just over 4 years, bought at ~4cm SL and...

I used to have four with just one male and they were fairly social with each other, I've fond memories of them being very brave and being happy to come and eat Tetra Prima in the palms of my hand while my hands were immersed in their tank water.

looks a good contender to my novice eyes, the barbels look too short for S. budgetti and the black spots look too numerous for S. occelifer.

Nice! Thanks for sharing, mate. I love obscure and rare synos. Yours looks very close to Xeno's but Xeno's doesn't sport any dorsal extensions... which may or may not mean much. Troy doesn't often have any of those fin extensions these days, my guess is that the six ~16-18cm SL Distichodus affinis ...

I keep my water levels low because it allows the plants to emerge, and also stops the fish getting out. Not nice finding them all crispy on the floor in the morning. I've had a few "jumpers" over the last ~8.5 years, but the one I was most upset about was finding one of my five Euchilicht...

I've just added a photo from ~12 months ago to the provisional C. joropo in "my cats," I presume others can see it there, I cannot find a simple way to insert that photo into this thread. The two provision L445s in the same tank have much squarer shaped dark patches on their body, rather t...

Re: Reintroduction & 20 gallon in need of Catfish!
Given you have Endlers in the tank and you want to try and have a better fry survival rate (be careful what you wish for!), an awful lot of catfish suitable for this tank are liable to eat the newborn fry, in my opinion. Looking at my own tanks and what I've had in them over the past ~8.5 years, I'd...

Re: The shy nature of my L270
It sounds like you have no dither fish in the upper water, which can be great to reassure others that it is safe to come out and "play." Given the last poster suggested a temp of 27/28C, which presumably is for the benefit of the L270, there seem to be a significant conflict of interest as...

I had six ~10cm SL specimens for a time, must be going back to ~2012, when healthy they were very active in my 5x2x2! Like you, I had no idea of their age when purchased. I've had a mixed bag of experiences with Chaetostoma spp. over the last ~8 years I've been in the hobby. My first Chaetostoma formosae was naively put straight into my 5x2x2 community of riverine fish, it "greeted" me everyday when adding food to the tank, but I'm not sure I ever saw it ea...

Hard to say from that photo, but it reminds me of my during its rapid grown spurt over the first two years I had it, where it grew from ~3cm SL to ~20cm SL (now ~25cm SL and nearly six years old).

So sorry to read of your losses, Shane. Amazing how all the Chaetostoma survived, plus if your Steatocranus are anything like my S. casuarius, you have a chance to rebuild the group. And once again, Synodontis show how resilient they can be. I've never kept them, but I'm not surprised by your 100% P...

Even though this thread is getting old and this particular tank's filtration has long been sorted, I thought I would add my 2p's worth... When I had 10 Microsynodontis sp(1) in a high current setup (120x30x37cm ~140l with ~1200lph filter turnover), they were very visibly active during the day, surfing the current (at the time I think I had them with my 8 Alestopetersisus sp.1). Found my ~5 year old male dead earlier today, the day after I returned home from a short vacation.
Leaves me with four female Congo Tetras, plus the seven Alestopetersius sp.1s (2m5f) that are approaching 6 years old (in same tank, they have always schooled together).
