Re: Is my plecos tail going to fall off?

Thank you Shane! It certainly looks like the condition is improving following the treatment you suggested. Are you able to give me any more info on what it is and the nature of the disease/fungus/whateveritis? I'm not sure it's completely beaten, I'm wondering if I shouldn't pull him out this weeken...

Re: Is my plecos tail going to fall off?

I was planning on doing a bit of a rescape anyway, so I collected to rocks I needed, removed the big pile of driftwood and caught the affected Panaque to treat as Shane suggested. Everything went well, I measured him while he was out and he's a shade over 11". I also checked up on my group of g...

Re: Is my plecos tail going to fall off?

Thanks Shane, what is it? (the ailment, not meth blue!) Is it contagious? I have a whitespot cure called "Wunder Tonic", it's 1.5% methylene blue, 0.1% malachite green, 0.05% acriflavine and 0.04% quinine, would that do the trick or should I get some pure meth blue?

Is my plecos tail going to fall off?

Yeah silly title, I know... :p I noticed this on my second largest L190's tail a few months ago, it hasn't seemed to have gotten any worse (or better) and the fish otherwise seems healthy and normal. Cancer? Warts? Any other suggestions? The fish is about 12", it's in my 2000L tank with three o...

Very interesting project, keep the updates coming, hopefully one day I'll be able to follow your footsteps with my L190! (thought I wish I'd started with more than four of them)

I believe L81 wasn't included in the description for B. xanthellus.

Fish in question looks like B. xanthellus to me, not B. Sp. L81, and I would suspect it is the L18/85 form given the small gold seams on the dorsal and tail.

I'll start with a little disclaimer that I have only very lightly skim-read the rather lengthy and detailed replies in this thread, but here's my 2c... I wouldn't even consider the idea of using a deep substrate bed for this purpose in a FW aquarium for many reasons, but mainly because it wastes val...

Re: Filter cleaning

If your canister is set up right you should be able to clean the mechanical media (sponge etc) with tap water/hose/fire etc to remove all the physical waste then just give the biological media a light rinse in a bucket of tank water. Especially if you only do one canister at a time you shouldn't exp...

Re: how often/much water change? pls

First and most obvious question (can't believe no one has asked!), what are your nitrates before and after doing a water change? They are the primary reason to change water, and if you're maintaining them with 30% water changes and your fish are healthy and breeding I would see no reason to go to 50...

Brief update. This weekend I sold the three L14 sunshine plecs, 2 L128 blue phantoms, the L81 Baryancistrus and one L190 royal which had a deformed spine at the base of the tail (was still a great fish, about 22cm and solid, just didn't want any dodgy genetics on the off chance that one day I do end...

I picked up my six gold nuggets today and they're even smaller than I expected! http://www.monsterfishkeepers.com/forums/attachment.php?attachmentid=1035714&d=1410064851 They're currently in a 100L quarantine tank, and I'm a little reluctant to let them go in the 2000L at the size they are (~1&q...

Re: Thinking of investing in a RO

That is probably an indication of very soft water then. The hardness is what provides a buffer to keep your pH stable, water with little hardness (or none at all, like RO water) will fluctuate up or down very easily, which is why it is important to either remineralise your RO water or mix it with ha...

Re: Thinking of investing in a RO

If all you're testing is the pH, you should spend some money on GH and KH test kits and a TDS/conductivity meter before even thinking about buying an RO unit. As lilu mentioned, there are different reasons for wanting/needing RO; is your tap water poor/inconsistent quality, or simply too hard for th...

Fair points, I guess wasn't basing my last post on hard scientific data. I agree completely that they haven't been kept long enough in captivity to know fully the differences at adult sizes, almost all of the pics I've been able to find of adult are pics of fish being caught in habitat. Hopefully I'...

Re: heater help please

Wow, must have been a big drop in the temp of your house! I'd look at insulating the back and sides of the tank with polystyrene if possible, might be cheaper than a new heater. Otherwise, I've had good mileage out of the Eheim/Jager heaters.

Jools, not sure if the historical data is still available, but IIRC even the PC cat-e-log listed L18/85 as having a larger max size than L177 before the profiles were merged when the species was described. There is also this Shane's World article; http://www.planetcatfish.com/shanesworld/shanesworld...

Trying to figure out which variety to order a group of, L177 has nicer colours but L18 gets bigger. Google image results are varied and inaccurate, so does anyone have pictures of mature examples of each?

Also, how big a difference in terms of size/growth rate have you found in aquariua?

I think two of almost anything isn't a good idea, especially aggressive catfish, so I think you made the right move. As for diet, I have L190 and L14 in the same tank together (along with L128 and L81 to cover all dietary bases) and feed a diet that is about 90% New Life Spectrum food, along with th...

I can't speak for your specific fish, but I have 20cm+ L190s kept with smaller L002, L81 and a couple of other smaller plecs and Corydoras sterbai. So far the only aggression I've seen is between the group of L190, they seem uninterested in the others, even when the cories are swimming all over them...

New Panaque and feeding video

Picked up another royal from a friend who was changing his set up, similar size to the other four but with an interesting fine-lined L27-ish pattern and very bold colours. Pete the tank si 240x120x70cm LxWxH, the big footprint is great for the Panaques, and now the corys.

There is sawdust everywhere, part of keeping Panaques I guess, I think the corys will help stir up the dead spots and keep it moving. They certainly seem to like forraging in it.

Drilled is the way to go IMO, especially if you're able to set up a 'herbie' or 'bean animal' type system (google it ;) ), though with only a single 1" drain you may be limited with the amount of flow you'll be able to have. Personally I wouldn't waste my time with a FW fuge, Pothos plants do a...

I believe certain terrestrial/semi-aquatic plants like Pothos (Epipremnum aureum) are better at comsuming nitrates than many aquaric species.
