Re: Growing rate for Hypancistris species

I find the L134's grow super fast. They go from yoke sack to 3/4" in the first month. They slow a bit ater that but are about 1" at 2 months and then 1 1/2" at 4 to 5 months. After that it is a slow steady growth. At a year they are in the 2" to 3" length for me. I keep mine...

Re: help sexing L183

Personaly I would guess both females. When I had some the males had quite a lot more bristles than the females. The females had one row along the edge of the lip, whereas the males had britles back up away from the edge and way more. Good luck with them. Sure wish I still had mine, maybe I'll find s...

Re: Looking for input on fighting injuries

I don't keep plants in my pleco tank but experienced a similar outbreak. I purchased 12 wild L134's. Within a few weeks of receiving them I experienced a similar outbreak. With one fish loosing his pectoral fin in a very short time. The fish suffered from whitish patches on their backs with the skin...

Re: Peckoltia compta parasite/battle scars?

Looks to be damage due to fighting. I see it quite often on my breeding colony, large white patches on there sides. On mine its usually on either side of the body below the dorsal fin. It clears up in time. The dark spots may be the dark colored cells starting to regrow in that area.

Are they like this all the time?

Fin development problem with fry

Has anyone experienced problems with fin development in their fry? Some of the fry are having issues with fin development. Many are perfect so I can rule out water conditions I think. Although water here is very very soft.During water changes I buffer with Seachem equilibrium and alkalinity booster,...

Re: My L134 Breeding efforts

Haven't updated for a while, fish have been breeding like crazy. They have been sitting on clutches pretty much non stop since April. There hasn't been a time where at least one male has had eggs or fry on the go. I have three 40 gallon breeders on the go for grow out. L134's put on huge growth in t...

Re: L134 breeding cave size

I have had upwards of 20 spawns from my 10 L134's this year. All of the spawns have been in a D shapped cave that is almost the exact dimensions of the adult fish. I had some round and square caves and had fish in them all the time but never a spawn. When I replaced them with the D / triangular shap...

Re: My L134 Breeding efforts

Yes I keep a bare tank to make cleaning easier, as well I think it is easier for the fish to find the food I put in there. None of it falls down amongst the gravel to rot. I have a Hydro Sponge Filter #5 PRO with the reticulated foam as well as a Eheim 2028. I just had another clutch laid last-night...

Re: Identification help.....L134?

Of all the L134 I have seen the border between the Yellow and the black/brown is always well defined a very sharp line. I would agree that your fish #2 is something different. As for the rest they all appear to be L134's, there is a lot of variation in the striping patterns on them.

Re: My L134 Breeding efforts (updated May 28th)

I have 11 adults in a 90 gallon tank and use 5 caves, the D shaped ones have seen all the breeding action if that make a difference. My water temp is 84 F. The water here in Vancouver is super soft, don't really fuss to much with hardness, just add some buffers at each water change to keep the GH an...

New clutch of eggs while fry still in cave?

Is it common for plecos to lay a clutch of eggs in a cave that contains fry?
I have a male L134 that has fry that are about 10 days post hatch, I just had a peek and there is a new clutch of eggs in there with the Dad and fry. Is this a common occurrence? Any need to worry?

Re: My L134 Breeding efforts (updated May 7th)

Note to self (and others), leave mother nature or maybe father in this case, to do its business. Lost whole batch in frysaver to fungus. 47 eggs kaput. Wont do that again. Luckily dad is sitting on yet another batch of eggs already. Also shook out the male that has had a female trapped for going on ...
