Hi! First off, you could do a small favor by listing the catfish you are planning on growing. There are three catfish not recommended for aquariums, even at 500 gallons. They are; channel, blue and flathead catfish. I know because I raised two channels, had more but they died, to around 36" and...

Yes, an angler is a fisherman. And people do ridiculous things with regard to fishing for fish all the time. Some people believe that certain fish, 'roughfish' in particular, are bad for the aquatic environment and should be removed, period. Catfish are considered as in-between a roughfish and a gam...

Another possibility is an angler came and caught these bullheads and tried to toss them onto shore just to kill them. It happens, unfortunately, everywhere. I'd ask your mother to see if other people frequent the pond and fish there. Yeah...edit...the reason being because the first one shows red spo...

Things to do...things to do...

It's been such a long time since I've posted on this website. AND this is a long post, so get a can of whatever beverage suits you. But here goes... Prior to this, I had a homemade filter in which a Rio 3100 would pump water through a layer of fabric, carbon and two layers of fabric through a 55 gal...

ok, first off, you'll need to post your water parameters before we can advise anything. Secondly, what kind of madtoms do you have, you say you have kept margined madtoms before, but no names of the afflicted ones.

Knifegill, from what I understand, you're saying that your madtom dropped LIVE young? If so, I don't think that madtoms could do that, perhaps you mistook the "young" for eggs? I could be wrong about this but I believe you mistook the eggs for live young.

As long as the water doesnt freeze all the way to the bottom and there is sufficent oxygen, channels will be JUST FINE as Silurus says.

Put them back if and ONLY IF you havent had ANY other fish in your tank, you could spread an exotic disease that will hurt the native fish population. Otherwise, raise them and eat them.

I'm 95% sure its a white catfish. If you look at the pictures in the cat e-log, you'll notice that the yellow bullhead's "whiskers", or barbels, on top of the head are longer and thicker than the white catfish...but that's not very reliable, however. My gut tells me it's a white catfish.

I wouldn't suggest having a bullhead or channel catfish because you might be buying your bullhead/channel catfish dinner. They WILL eat whatever they can fit in their mouths, for example, Ive caught several using peices of Ivory soap. You could buy the channel cats small, but like Matsp said, they d...

Silurus is right, they do grow at about the same rate for their entire life, but in my experience, it seemed to take forever for mine to grow past a foot. I think it took an year for my babies to grow past the 12 inch mark, (I raised them from about 1.5 to 2 inches long). And I wouldnt worry a bit a...

As to your question of the breeding habits for channel catfish, I believe that the catfish need at least a large cave of some type. In the wild they tend to pick out hollow things, (logs, tires, underwater caves, etc.), LARGE plant holders may work (found at any respectable flower shop or your local...

ahhh...no...the pleco looks nothing like the two you posted. For the first one, the pleco doesn't even have the "orangey" colored fins and the eye is shaped differently. The second one is closer but still, that's not the one I have at my work. The armor on the pleco at my work is different...

strange common pleco

I work in a pet store, and today I noticed something strange. My boss bought several large common plecos. (I don't believe that the fish will die by typing their general name). And there was one that struck me as funny looking. What I mean by that is that it looks completely like a common pleco, hyp...

It's one of the bullhead species. But there is NO sure way to be 100% postive which bullhead species it is unless you show the bottom part of it. What I mean is, when compared to a black bullhead the yellow bullhead is virtually identical except for ONE feature. The barbels or "whiskers" u...

You can try natural food that they would eat in the wild, that is what's best for the fish, usually. If it is warm enough at your home, you could try soaking your garden with a hose for about a half hour (ONLY if you have a garden that is pesticide free, madtoms are sensitive to everything) and try ...

28 "? No sirree bob. I've sucessfully raised two past 36" in a 500 gallon tank (a bit tight though) but they died when the pump that filtered the tank short-circuited in the water. (They were electrocuted). But the majority of them do die at smaller sizes from natural causes. For the most ...

That size is rather large for a bullhead (and the white catfish for that matter) as the biggest one I have caught was 1.5 feet long and it was a black bullhead. I'm starting to think that you're talking about a flathead catfish, pylodictus olivarus. Those things look either like a wet log or a giant...

channel catfish difficulties, this isnt a rookie thing

I feel kind of embarassed posting here. I consider myself an expert on channel catfish as I've raised two of them past 36 inches. I recently acquired a 6 to 8 inch channel catfish from my LFS. It won't eat anything. I tried pellets, chopped earthworms, minnows, recently dead minnows, cut up minnows ...
