Re: A day in the life of Planet

It should be safe to assign variants to all pictures. The "do not move this image" relates to articles that link to the image - the image link is not changed by the variant information, it is just used to select which images to show when selecting a specific variant (and if you "don't...

Re: Ancistrus sp. L180 photo mis-identified?

I can't say for absolute sure that it is exactly L180, but it's definitely not a Rio Ucayali or something like that. The fish in the photo is not the typical Ancistrus body, it's flatter than the typical one - similar to A. macrophtalmus and A. ranunculus (not quite as wide and flat as A. ranunculus...

Paru (Venezuela) or Paru (Ventuari) would be the pattern used previously.

Re: Occurrence data: better to have it and be (slightly) wrong?

Yes, so I would absolutely make those pins different in some way - maybe a + instead of * or dot in the marker - perhaps even a special one for "our own data". And I think the idea of importing those markers rather than asking GBIF for each one - if nothing else because I think it'll be mu...

Re: Occurrence data: better to have it and be (slightly) wrong?

Ok, I'm skipping over MOST of the discussion, and commenting on a few of Eric's comments... If the waterway was originally entered with a specific Lat/Long coordinate corresponding to a specific collection locality for once species, then that pin is more important than just "midway" along ...

Re: Occurrence data: better to have it and be (slightly) wrong?

I don't know what to add here. The data is entered largely by me (not counting the "type locality" markers). It is my fault if it's wrong, and usually it's because I have no "better knowledge". I'm not sure if everyone commenting here has access to the database for updating local...

Re: Faulty Distribution map display for Corydoras schwartzi

It's not just the Rio Purus. I just found this problem again when looking at the profiles for Corydoras sp(c140) and Leptorhamdia marmorata . They're from the Negro. But again, same circumstance - only one occurrence, nothing more specific than Negro, and no Lat/Long data for type locality. I haven...

Re: And yet another distribution error: Centromochlus meridionalis in the Arabian Sea! LOL

There is a bit of code that runs when Jools vets the update, which tries to parse the coordinates out of the type locality field. It doesn't ALWAYS work, especially if there's something a bit weird in there. It's REALLY not easy to write code that does this. But it's better than expecting you, me or...

Re: Faulty Distribution map display for Corydoras schwartzi

Yeah, I figured out what the problem is. When trying to figure out the "scale" to fit everything in, the code would divide by zero (or something like that) when there is only ONE entry on the map - which was leading to "weird" results in the remaining math. It works out SOMETIMES...

Re: Faulty Distribution map display for Corydoras schwartzi

I will have a look. Note that it's not what it says in the distribution as such that matters, but what it says in the "occurrence" records for that species. The coordinates in the database for Rio Purus should show this: https://www.google.co.uk/maps/place/5%C2%B041'42.9%22S+64%C2%B019'11....

We really should be more generous with what symbols we accept as ' and " symbols. They can be terribly hard to spot the difference (when in doubt, use only the single quote ' - two of them for second, one for minute).

The best shops I've been to is Nols Ciklidhobby (Just north of Gothenburg) and Aquazoo (a good hours drive south of Gothenburg). I haven't been, but Akvarielagret in Bromma (just outside Stockholm) has had good reviews.

I have asked on a Swedish Facebook group, will forward any replies...

Re: L144 CotM article/species page

Hi Jools and Mats, Is there any way to remove or block the "Add to My Cats" link on the L144 CLOG, so that more people in the future don't sign up for this fish again as being theirs? I suspect that this is probably way more difficult than it sounds, since I expect that it's more of an el...

I'm not sure whether another amelanistic fish was imported, or if the mutation occurred naturally. It's of course possible that it occurred naturally too. But if someone gets a lone male that is amelanistic, what females would you breed it with? (If it's a female amelanistic fish, it may be harder t...

My typing isn't getting any better, is it... :)

I'm looking at this - should be relatively easy to fix, I think (I have already fixed the exact one that was in your post, but then immediately tripped over another of the same kind, so good thing I tested locally before sending a fix to Jools...)

Re: text gibberish

Pretty sure the problem is in the first layer of code, where you enter the data and submit it to the DB. It looks HTML-ized in the database, and I think the problem is the request_var() that "encodes" things, even tho' we don't want it. I will do some more digging today, as didn't get much...

Just found an interesting feature, however. If two species has the exact same number of keepers, only one is being displayed.... ;)

Probably need to come up with a better way to maintain a "most kept" list. Will try to do this today.
