Mixing tap water with rain water should provide enough stability to your water. I do filter my rainwater with activated carbon before using it for water changes for reasons that I think you're aware of.

IMHE mixing different loricarids it's a real crap shoot when trying to anticipate inter-species aggression. Those other loricarids, no matter their size, can inflict damage to others. I'm not sure, but are all of the species that you are keeping in the tank endemic to the same environment in nature?...

The mesh doesn't effect the flow in any appreciable way.

I raise young BNPs and in the tanks where I've got homemade airlifters I use screen door mesh fastened with electric zip ties to prevent the young from going to the dark side. The petricola/lucipinnis take a while to settle in to new surroundings. Even when transferred from one of your tanks to another they are still shy after being moved. Be patient and they will eventually get comfortable and you'll see more of them.
