Re: Corydoras adolfoi barbels regrowth?

I had a rescue sterbai once that had no barbels when I bought it. With good food and a better habitat they grew back but were a little stunted. I once had a trilineatus who lost his entire tail due to rot. It rotted all the way back to the body. I treated with Kanaplex and, much to my surprise, the ...

Re: Sterbai with pimple? Help!

After about 6 weeks and several cycles of enlarging and sloughing off Chessie's pimple seems to have stabilized into a sort of callus. Never treated with anything. And none of the other fish ever fell ill. I can't use sand so those beautiful barbells are on a gravel substrate!

Right! Just another low life torturing animals for fun. And before this, someone in Florida was pulling a shark behind a ski boat. I think the Police got after them.

Re: Sterbai with pimple? Help!

Right after I posted these pics the yellow granule started separating and fell off. I couldn't retrieve it. Now she just has a white raw spot. Typically, another eruption will start growing soon. Chessie was an aggressive digger, until she got a sore nose. I'm wondering if she got a splinter or shar...

Re: Corydoras Sterbai with unusual pattern!

I thought you might want to see Oliver all growed up and resting on his favorite rock bed! And his pattern did change. He also has a nice warm light honey brown coloration that the other Sterbai don't have. And he likes to elevate when feeding while the other Sterbai stay close to the bottom. He rea...

Sterbai with pimple? Help!

Hello everyone. I have a school of nine healthy Corydoras Sterbai. One of them, Chessie, developed a sort of pimple a couple of months ago. It starts out about the size of a large grain of sand and then grows bigger and bigger until it kind of sloughs off. Then the cycle begins again. Other then the...

"Pepper" the paleatus thinks hes a Sterbai! He loves his friends: Trixie, Datsun, Otis, Oliver, Nano, Chessie, Jim, Ziggy and Blackie! Its good you rescued Coda. Every Cory deserves a good home! Every time I go in Petco or Petsmart I want to rescue all their catfish, they all look so sad. ...

Re: Need help ID'ing mystery Cory, please!

Here is my gang of 10 having a snack on Cory Beach. The lone C. paleatus is a rescue cat that was alone, sick and malnourished in a tank at Petco. He's fine now and part of Team Sterbai. He seems quite happy!

Re: Need help ID'ing mystery Cory, please!

Hi Angela, My team of 10 sterbai run the spectrum from light to dark coloration. So may be you have a "blonde." Blonde corys have more fun! I doubt its due to poor breeding. Now sterbai will pale when stressed - so do the things that make them relaxed and happy. They are happiest in a grou...

Re: Deworming Corydoras drug choice

Thanks all for the information. I actually received the fish a few days ago. Shipping was pretty tough on them; the water was foul and they had some bacterial and fungal issues. I've been getting them back into shape with IAL, frozen bloodworms, and clean water. Once they're in better shape I'll ob...

Re: Cory sterbai barbel problem

Harold - Here is another idea for you to consider. My tank use to have all coarse pea gravel so I could grow plants. The corys did fine but I kept reading about how sand is best. So I set up a "cory beach" area for them in the front center of the tank using Carib Sea Peace River Gravel. It...

Re: Cory sterbai barbel problem

Harold - look at that sand under some type of magnification like a Jewelers loop. Make sure it isn't sharp. I don't use sand so I'm not an expert, but aren't you suppose to keep the depth to about a quarter inch so it doesn't go anoxic? It looks pretty deep in your tank. Then when you stir it up dur...

My Cory's love the "Peace River." The "Rio Grande" is a little bigger. The "Sunset Gold" is sand. My tank can't run sand so the "Peace River" is the finest I can go.

Re: Fish artificial selection ethics (why are albinos apparently not hated here?)

All this got me thinking. Can anyone name a fish that has had a genetic modification that is "helpful" vs "harmful?"

Is there any dog that is superior to the wolf from which it descended?

Such a fascinating topic!

Re: Fish artificial selection ethics (why are albinos apparently not hated here?)

If you stop and think about it, the tropical fish trade may be the most cruel pet trade of all. Think about what the wild caught fish go through to reach their final destination of an aquarium somewhere in the world. Same for captive bred fish. The abuse, trauma, death, disease, and malnutrition is ...

Re: Fish artificial selection ethics (why are albinos apparently not hated here?)

Genetic manipulation via selective breeding has been going on for thousands of years. Selective breeding of wolves produced the great variety of dogs we have today. And most of the crops and farm animals we have are the result of selective breeding. Selective breeding, which is a slow process, is no...

Re: Need help Repairing a Pump Power Cord, Please

TwoTank, I would try the silicone first because we know cured silicone is safe for fish. If you fill up the cavity with a nice BLOB of silicone once it cures it should bind up everything and also act a semi-flexible strain relief. Make sure to clean everything well so the silicone sticks to the surf...

Re: Need help Repairing a Pump Power Cord, Please

Aquarium silicone is very strong when fully cured. I'd get a fresh tube, attach the nozzle and fill that area up with silicone. In 72 hours it should be fully cured and fine to use. If you don't have a nozzle you can get a small disposable oral syringe from your pharmacy. Pull out the plunger then f...

I was hoping that he would stay that way because its a cool pattern. I went back to the LFS and bought the other 3. So now I have all 5 babies that were in the tank. It bothered me to separate them. "Reunited, and it feels so good.........."

He's less than an inch long but really feisty! I got him and his buddy but his buddy has typical patterning. My wife has named him Oliver because of the O on his side. Oliver is a really beautiful little fish. Sort of looks like he has Korean writing on his side! Here is a better pic.

Just got this guy at the LFS today. Sold as a C. Sterbai. Is this a hybrid or just an unusual pattern? Thanks!

Beautiful set-up mate! The Java Fern & driftwood looks very elegant! Just curious - is that a white Styrofoam sheet underneath the tank & sump?
