Hi, Just wanted to let you all know what finally took care of the disease, just in case someone else picks up some fish with this problem. After the unsuccessful Pimafix and Melafix treatments, I tried a week of Maracyn 2. This was also ineffective. I then tried 2 weeks of daily 25% water changes, v...

In general, I like Shane's definitions regarding various types of filtration. They are straight-forward, and easy to understand. There are, however, a couple points, that may need to be clarified. Under biological filtration, it says "The end product of biological filtration, nitrate, can only ...

Jools, I'm a rank novice/amateur when it comes to catfish, having only paid them much attention (only corys so far) for a little over a year now. But I have been trying to make myself a key for the genus Corydoras. I know, I am probably in way over my head! but I've been having fun working on it--it...

C141 is a long-snouted species.

My guess would be a C. schwartzi--they do not always have black extending into the dorsal fin. Or the one shown in Ian Fuller's (Coryman) book, on identifying corys, as Corydoras cf. schwartz, on p. 229.

Ian, Thanks for the I.D. Would you tell me on what basis you say C131 rather than C. leopardus, or one of the others of that group? I'd like to get some more, but need to know what to characteristics to look for. As far a high protein, I've been feeding them blackworms every couple of days. Would th...

I have shied away from most of them (sticking primarily to livebearers and Rift Lak...

I.D. question and a health problem

I would like some help in IDing these "misc. catfish" I recently purchased. They are currently about 2.5 inches SL. I do not know anything about location of collection. I would guess that they are one of the "leopardus" group of catfish, but which? http://img125.imageshack.us/img...

How did you determine they weren't leopardus? When I look at the pictures on this site and in Ian's book, some of them are marked the same to me--like the first thumbnail of both species her on PC.

I think "adipose fin" should be designated as rayless , to distinguish it from a second dorsal fin, which has rays. Also there is a typo in the 3rd sentence So may be: Adipose fin: Adipose means fatty, it refers to the rayless fin that is between the dorsal fin and the caudal fin on many c...

Here's one that needs defined for the glossary.

What, exactly, is "rostrum" as it relates to catfish? I don't think of catfish as having a beak or a beak-like projection--which is the common scientific definition.

I would question the Notes on I.D. if it is saying the the line doesn't split on C. melini . I am no expert, so I do not know if this holds true all the time, but the difference may be that:...

I have been under the impression that "school" and "shoal" are not the same. That a " school " is a highly-ordered group of fish with members going the same direction and maintaining a fixed distance between neighboring fish in the group (similar to MatsP's definition)....

Each fry should be either albino or bronze. Whether or not you get any albino fry or not would depend on the ancestry of your bronze fish. If it has albino in the ancestry, it may be carrying the albino gene as well as the bronze gene; in which case about 1/2 the fry should be albino. If the bronze ...

Hi Gabs,

If you could provide a picture of the first one, the fish on the left from a direct side angle as you have, but with the face and tail showing

I'm still learning to distinguish C. delphax and, as I understand it, the key points are in the head profile and tail.

Thanks,

I have been reading Ian's Cory ID book and Shane's Venezuelan trip report, and both mention that some wild caught corys look different after they have been in captivity for awhile. For Corydoras ID, how useful is the 3rd pr. of bristles?

I was at the LFS looking at a shoal of unidentified catfish that had 3 pairs of rictal bristles. I thought this would be helpful, because Ian's book had mentioned this characteristic for some fish. When I got back home, I discovered this was mentioned only in reference to some long-nosed catfish. Wh...

I expect in some cases it's due to isolated populations with a common ancestor.

Is/has anyone been working on the phylogeny of the Corys?
