Re: Lophiosilurus alexandri
I've had it a longer than 7 months, I just didn't update my My Cats page until 7 months ago. I bought mine at 4" around Christmas 2007 so the time frame is very similar with an average growth of half an inch a month.

Re: Lophiosilurus alexandri
Feeding won't be a problem, in my experience they readily take frozen food and quickly become hand tame swimming up the glass to take food from the surface, they can even become too tame and refuse to take food that isn't offered by hand as mine did when I was target feeding it to make sure a gready...

Re: Feeding Preditory Catfish
The best way to feed predatory catfish is to feed them one meal that is large enough to make their stomach area visibly swollen and rounded and then don't feed again until the stomach has returned to its normal flat condition, as the fish grow the size of their meal and the length of time it takes t...

Re: Calophysus macropterus
The jardini is more likely to attack the cat to be honest, I have both these fish but in seperate tanks and the jardini is the far more aggressive of the two fish. As single specimens most Calophysus are fairly placid, I have a 45cm adult in a 200g which it shares with some Brycon species without pr...

Re: adonis bred?
These are the same pair that were being sold at the Crewes Hill branch of Maidenhead Aquatics as a breeding pair back in the summer, i was interested in buying them myself but unfortunately couldn't justify spending £100 on fish at the time. They seemed quite friendly towards each other in the shop ...

Re: tank size!
Well its only 2.5 feet tall but yes 8x6 foot print. Its all been running smoothly for nearly a year now, theres a few little things i'd do differently if i were starting again, like not bothering with the textured background as the rays think its great fun to chew bits off it and let it float around...

Re: tank size!
Why don't you just put them in the 1000g you said you had? Anyway if you plan on getting a jardini arowana then you'll need two tanks as once the jardini reaches adulthood it will start trying to kill everything in the tank, they are the most aggressive of all the arowana species and rarely mix well...

Re: Deciding on a new tank to buy
The best value for money external filters in my opinion are the good old Eheim Classic series, very basic design with no thrills but they do the job they are meant to do and last forever. For the tank size you are thinking of the smallest model, the Eheim 2213, would be ample and i believe you can p...

Re: Deciding on a new tank to buy
It is mine and many other peoples experience that the Juwel tanks are actually of very poor quality and suffer from a whole host of problems which Juwel are more than aware of but still haven't fixed despite the problems being ongoing for at least the last 7 years. The most common fault is with the ...

Re: larius pictus!!!!!
If you already have a 1000 gallon tank then why do you need to ask? Surely you would just grow the catfish up in the 180 until it is large enough to go into the bigger tank.

Re: larius pictus!!!!!
A tank in the region of 900-1000 gallons would be adequate to keep a Liearius pictus and a silver arowana, anything smaller would be a waste of money since both fish will be in excess of 2 feet long within 3 years.

Re: Tigrinus keepers rally around and answer my question
Actually its Brachyplatystoma tigrinum these days
The Catelog profile suggests 24 to 28'c, as a rapids dwelling species i would have thought cooler rather than warmer water was more their cup of tea but i've not kept a tig myself so can't say anything from personal experience.

Re: Any Doradid Catfish Keepers?? Please post here!!!
There is no problem with the actual "tank" apart from it could maybe be a little bigger for some of the larger growing species, keeping fish in these big tubs is no worse than keeping fish in a man made pond and the fish probably prefer not being gawped at through the sides like they are i...

Re: Tigrinus keepers rally around and answer my question
I've always thought that the fast water dwelling species like tigs and jurense preffered slightly cooler water as well.

Re: Any Doradid Catfish Keepers?? Please post here!!!
Some wood or pipes for them to hide in would be nice instead of them having to play who can get closest to the box filter in the corner. Nice collection though, great markings on those Megladoras

Re: Any Doradid Catfish Keepers?? Please post here!!!
In my war against trumpet snails - where many battles were lost despite weapons like traps, siphoning, loads of fruit and veggies, Botias and puffers - I will now admit myself some foul play and introduce a Megalodoras uranoscopus shortly. I've done so a long time ago and know for sure that this wi...

Re: Leiarius longibarbis Feeding
I've been feeding my catfish cooked frozen seafood for as long as i've been keeping fish that eat that kind of thing, and i've got the largest Liearius pictus i have ever seen or heard of (she's a 27"+ monster) so there can't be that much wrong with it. Throw in a few cooked mussels and prawns ...

Re: Leiarius longibarbis Feeding
Your longibarbus should be fed meaty foods once or twice a week depending on appetite, a good indicater is to look at their stomachs after feeding, after a meal the stomach should be swollen to two or three times its normal size and the fish should not be fed again until it has gone flat again. Whil...

Re: Perrunichthys or Leiarius? loads of pics!
I'd bet money on them being Leiarius longibarbus, L.pictus has a distinctive pale stripe which runs from before the dorsal fin down across the body towards the anal vent, in adult fish it is less obvious than in juviniles but still visable when looked for. How long have they been together and what s...

The Liearius is huge, 26" from nose to tail and at an anglers estimate around 10lbs in weight (i think thats roughly 5kg) its never bothered the Sorubims but i did try adding a second smaller Liearius that a friend needed rehomed and my original one went absolutely mad, even in that big tank it...

Until recently i used Eheim 2217's for all my filtration and found them to be reliable and faultless, the only reason i stopped using them is that running ten 20w filters was costing a fortune in electric so i opted for simple air powered filtration powered by one hi-blow airpump for most of my tank...
