Re: How low is too low for KH

I agree with Darrel. Pics and more details of filtration, etc would be helpful. Are you using KH boosting media in your filter? Where I live on the southwest coast of Canada, our municipal water is basically rainfall and snow melt with a TDS of < 30 normally. In a 24 cycle, my planted tanks swing fr...

I subbed to your Youtube channel just to see all your updates as soon as you have them, even though I have been following this thread for quite a while. Hope everything goes well with the upcoming inspection.

Re: Stuby's fish room build

Is this going to be an in-floor heater? If so, how have you insulated the floor from heat losses to ground, which is probably at year round 55 F a few feet below grade in Michigan? It appears he has already insulated above the concrete before running the heating lines in that pic. And yes that is a...

Re: Cat Food Anyone?

I don't know about over in India, but in Canada, the bulk food of choice would be salmon or trout feed. Cat food has taurine and all kinds of additives specifically for cats.

I have not even seen specimens smaller than 7" for sale and those are relatively rare. So hopefully this is a new development that is stable. I would love to see affordable F1's around.

F1 Panaque suttoni (or suttonorum)

I just downloaded the most recent fish list from Spencer Jack's and they listed F1 P. suttoni (Blue eye pleco) as fish coming soon. So people are breeding these now? I assume in Asia? Anyone seen any? I am curious how it was accomplished.

Re: Sick bronze corydorus

If you use a water conditioner like Seachem Prime it will not only dechlorinate the water but will bind the metals so that the water is safe and then you can change as much water as you like.

Re: Indoor Pond Project

Maybe you can just use plumber's putty and paint it black. I am with Bas. I find fish are able to get into the smallest gaps and get stuck when you are not looking.

Re: Lighting for a 864L Rio Negro/Black water tank?

I think it will look great. I have 2 AquaRay and 3 Panarama LED modules on my 125 gallon sequenced differently. I set one module up in the middle to be the only light on at 10 - 11 PM and the effect on the tank is amazing. It's the favourite lighting scheme in that tank for me. Unfortunately, I grow...

Re: Cichlid tankmates for Peckoltia compta and Panaqolus L397?

100% with Shane. I had G. steindachneri in my 125 gallon with some Panaque (fairly big) and Pseudacanthicus (and other plecos, such as L129) and when they were in there but plecos didn't get enough food. Once I sold them my plecos became bolder, and I started getting fry out of the L129.

It'll only raise the TDS if it is soluble. If it is not dissolved in the water, then it's not part of the Total Dissolved Solids.

Re: Ranking of best pH meters, April 2016

My wife works as a full time chemist in a massive research facility and she always laughs at me when I read the pH on my monitors. She's like, you know on those meters that you can afford, the decimals places are almost meaningless right? She told me the regular titration kits are actually more cons...

Re: Do Butterfly Plecos NEED driftwood?

That isn't true, it's variable. The Amazon basin is a rather large area and you don't find any of the Dekeyseria spp. that we're talking about in the Amazon main channel. Also, the OP may, or may not, have naturally soft water. In terms of keeping these species, it depends on which one you're keepi...

Ah true. Never thought of that. I was just thinking of the continuous release aspect like Catappa. Would be a nasty mess to clean out of the filter bag.

Re: Rooibos Tea

This is a very informative discussion. So you guys basically steep it and pour the tea into the tank? Can you put it in a media bag and put it in your canister filter/sump/behind an HMF? Would it have the same effect or would it be too weak? I use Catappa and as mentioned elsewhere it makes a big me...

There are a number of articles on the web but I have found this one to be very good (I have not used it since all my tanks have plants so I never fishless cycle). http://www.cichlid-forum.com/articles/fishless_cycling.php As for ammonia you just have to check the ingredients on the bottle. You don't...

Re: Bio-Load question

Do you want to catch 25 military grade torpedoes =)) Honestly that sounds like a great idea but I don't know where I would put them, the only other tank is the Amaralia hypsiura tank and I'm sure I would have a few less rummy nose after that. Where does everybody get their ammonia or ammonia chlori...
