Re: Pterosturisoma microps

I agree with Norman regarding the sexing of these fish. Janne, you have them backwards. The first pregenital scute is star-shaped in females with concave sides while the male has straight sides to this scute. I first wrote about this in the mid-'90s, published in the North American Catfish Associati...

Loricaria similima is imported out of Peru (seasonally) and is likely the most common. Particularly around this time of year.

Re: Florida's plecos

He looks delicious! Honestly, provided they are from clean waterways, large Pl*cos are a great meal! I had them as an appetizer in Peru. The traditional way to cook them is to throw them directly on hot coals or over an open fire (but I would gut them first). If it's a female, do not remove the eggs...

Re: 1320 liter clearwater biotope

Very, very NICE! I really like the dimensions you chose. I want one too! One suggestion for an aquarium this large. You may want to consider installing spirit levels on each side of the aquarium on the horizontal supports. With rocks, gravel, water and glass your total mass will be an estimated 4400...

Re: Is my White Tip Shark pregnant?

Has anyone been successful in breeding white tip before? Yes, there was a reported spawning in northern Iowa in the mid-1990s. 12-14" long fish were cycled from freshwater to saltwater and back again. If I remember correctly, the fish spawned as the salinity began to drop. I didn't witness the...

Re: Multipunctatus Spawn

If you have an egg tumbler you can strip almost immediately. Strip the female cichlids in 3-4 days you'll recover most of the multipunctata eggs (freshly hatched) at 80degrees F. Survival rates even when stripped this early are still very high, in clean water well over 85% IME. You can also siphon u...

My impression has alway been that this is likely geographic variations. The picture appears to be nicked directly from the Cat-ELog.

It's reversed with a bit of cropping, but it's the same picture. You may want to remind your dealer that the images in the Cat-ELog are copyrighted to the original photographer. Unauthorized use is not permitted.

I don't believe your fish is an L259 as these are quite flattened in profile. Your fish has a much higher form.

Re: Fish similar to but smaller than Redtail Catfish

Well, from what i have seen they are an active but not stressed out catfish. I like to see my fish roaming about. Also, many of them are social and not at all afraid of feeding from the hand. That would be nice. Ive even seen one that liked to be petted and of course that would be cool too. Definat...

Mussels I simply freeze until they open (just like boiling, the bad ones don't open), then just feed them on the half-shell.

Any of the Pseudopimelodus or Cephalosilurus species would fit the bill quite nicely.

The Genus is most likely Rineloricaria ***. As a hobbiest, identifying them down to a species level can be difficult at best without a collection locale. Care is very similar across the Genus. Rineloricaria teffeana has a good write up of the basics you'll need. (***=Is Hemiloricaria still valid?)

Trachycorystes sp. perhaps.

Unfortunately, these are not listed in the Cat-ELog.

It looks very similar (though not quite the same) as an Epistylus super-infection you see sometimes on imported Corydoras.

Re: Yellow Spotted Catfish needs a name

It is a Leporacanthicus spp. but not sure of which one. I would guess likely an L-007 .

Note the diet on this one. These are distinctly more carnivorous than most Loricariids.

We're a ways away from that yet, I need to find them first... And, yeah, of course I'd give them a 125 gallon if their size warranted it. They are reported to be a schooling fish in the wild. BTW: I have yet to see one larger than ~4" SL. Not saying they don't grow the 6.1" indicated in th...

I couldn't be happier with this conversation... I'll be visiting my LFS over the coming weeks in hopes they become more available in the US as well. I need to add to the four I already have. There would be nothing better IMO than a 75 gallon tank, tangled with sticks and wood and about 10-15 (or mor...

If it's still eating, I would consider medicating it's food with Metronidazole (if you can get it easily in Au. that is). Two common intestinal super-infections are Ameobic infections and Hexamita (the suspected pathogen). Both of which are consistent with the wasting away you are seeing and both ar...
