Re: Hypostomus plecostomus

Hi Jools,

this might be the same specimen as in picture 11 (same picture author), IMHO too flat for H. plecostomus, the caudal peduncle also looks too high in comparison with body height.

Best regards,
Karsten

Re: Hypostomus plecostomus

Picture 13 (JJ PL) is also no H.plecostomus, the dorsal fin spine is definitely out of range (too long vs. Weber et al. 2012).

Re: Hypostomus plecostomus

Hi, the pictures from Shane Lindner also do not really look like H. plecostomus to me, much closer than the other one though. It would be very interesting to know where those came from. Did those eventually come from Colombia, Orinoco drainage ? Officially, H. plecostomus is also listed for this riv...

Hypostomus plecostomus

Hi, image 11 on species page is not H. plecostomus , body shape is quite off (much too flat). Hence, assuming that it's the same specimen or from the same group probably also images 6-8 from the same image author are not. In pictures 6 & 8 the pleco also looks too flat. Usually the underside is ...

Hi Daniel, thanks. fish 2 might be Trachelyopterus cf. galeatus yes, this would also be my guess.. fish 10 is Pterobunocephalus aff. depressus yes, this fits much better. fish 9 is an undescribed Bunocephalus I think I just took the best fit of the listed species but I agree Pseudobunocephalus amazo...

Re: Whiptail ID

Hi,
to me it looks rather like a hybrid (likely with R. lanceolata, possibly also other species), this species is quite commonly crossed with the red whiptails as the females of R. lanceolata lay significantly more eggs, juveniles are very often nevertheless quite red but darken with age.

although the colouration reminds a bit of C. nanus, the probability to find this species in the pet trade by chance is zero.

Re: Which type of parotocinclus do I have?

Hi, if these were sold as P. jumbo I would rather expect to have a by-catch of this species from north-eastern Brazil. I do agree that it is not P. sp. "Pernambuco" but IMHO (I have kept that species for some years) it is also not P. britskii although body shape and colouration is much clo...

Hi, the location is wrong for P. raso and also for L 435 (=LDA066), both froms originate from Amapa, Brazil. The pictures are showing a form that is IMHO certainly something different and nearly for sure it also did not come from Guyana. If you continue to use the page for L 435 you should update th...

Paralithoxus cf. raso

Hi, the pictures on the species page of Paralithoxus cf. raso do not show P. raso and also not L 435 (which might be identical with P. raso ). The colouration is quite off, both species/forms have spots that are approximately the size of the orbital diameter. Furthermore P. raso has significantly lo...

Corydoras filamentosus & CW143

Hi, Corydoras filamentosus belongs to acutus group, lineage 1. Similar story as with C. spilurus , the tissue sample used within the framework of the phylogeny of Alexandrou et al. 2010 belonged to the sympatric CW143 which belongs to lineage 8. I have discussed this with Raphael Covain and he only ...

Corydora spilurus

Hi, this species belongs to acutus group, lineage 1. In the phylogeny of Alexandrou et al. 2010 the tissue samples used belonged to CW138 and not to C. spilurus , that's why this species ended up in the wrong lineage. I have written an article on this topic in the BSSW report 3-2017 "Über die I...

Hi, I would tentatively agree with CW029. pictures 6-9 on the species page are in fact Hypostomus spiniger. It's rather outside distribution range for H. commersoni and the last picture with the adult is without any doubt not H. commersoni.

Re: Corydoras julii or hybrid ?

Hi,

I don't see anything that would suspect me of this being a hybrid. However, it is most likely C. trilineatus which is commonly sold as C. julii.
The albinos are most likely C. schultzei / C. aeneus, a sharper picture especially of the dorsal fin could confirm this.
