Re: Need an ID on this pleco.
From Rio Takutu / Rio Tacutu we know of a Hypancistrus which is black with white spots; L404 . That makes it very likely that this is the fish in the jar :D Haakon Indeed, I figured that would be what it was! Like this? I saw a group of them for sale recently in my favourite fish shop :) ImageUploa...

Re: Small Breedable Pleco
L306 is from the Takutu river on the border of Brazil and Guyana. I have assumed this is a fairly rare area for fishes to be exported from, but I didn't think L306 were actually banned from the US.

The Hypancistrus article by Haakon also provides excellent coverage of the diversity of Xingu Hypancistrus. I do not regret subscribing to Amazonas, they provide excellent, current material.

Agreed with the above, I just wanted to mention that I actually prefer starting tanks with established filters, makes it way easier and takes a load off the mind when you don't have to worry about cycling.

My apologies for the delay in sending out the article, but I was going to wait until I obtained an actual published copy of the paper (I only have the electronic pre-print at the moment). Understandable, I like having the published final copy... Also, a copy of the latter paper would be appreciated...

Re: Please help me ID this orange and black pleco
"Expert" is relative... It's definitely a Panaqolus; there are a number of species, including undescribed species, that look really similar to this, and so identification can be difficult, especially without locality information. If you know what to look for, Panaqolus and Peckoltia can be...

Dorado is . That doesn't necessarily mean the fish was properly labeled, but it does look like a Brachyplatystoma from what I can tell.

Re: Sorry, another Snowball Pleco question.
I don't think the prices between L201, H. contradens, and H. inspector vary all that much. However, H. contradens appears to be less common than L201, and H. inspector even less common. As someone who has hunted for H. inspector as well, I can definitely say that in general they are not the one sold...

I don't think the big guys are Hypancistrus. To me they look more similar to Panaqolus sp`acre` , but that doesn't seem to be a match either. Peckoltia vittata and Panaqolus maccus are quite different. Click on the links to check out the Cat-elog images. Also, Panaqolus (and Panaque) differ from Pec...

Re: Fish from the Mekong, ID? (Not a catfish at all!)
I think I've heard (or maybe I assumed) these fish ship extremely poorly. I've never seen one in the states but they've made it as far as the UK since I think PFK ran an article on Polynemus paradiseus a few years ago.

I wouldn't be too worried then if it's started feeding! As long as it's started it'll keep on doing it. Just leave it alone a little and keep providing food.
I for one definitely tip-toe and move slowly as I approach my tanks when I want to make sure not to scare my plecs!

Re: L102? and Need Help!!
In quarantine, you don't have to worry about it being scared of other fishes. With zucchini I don't think you'd have to worry about direct competition, but loricariids can be pretty shy. So in my opinion, yes, it'd be good to keep the fish separate from others, just to be sure. Getting a new loricar...

Re: L102? and Need Help!!
Definitely not L102. I don't think it's a Hypancistrus either. This looks to be Parancistrus nudiventris , which in my opinion is a really cool fish too! If you can tell, Parancistrus have a wider and rounder snout than Hypancistrus, which typically have pointier snouts. Also, the teeth of Parancist...

Re: L312 eating L128s
Well that's fascinating. I've heard of rasping between loricariids fighting in caves, where one is stuck while the other rasps on it, but I've never heard of baby loricariids doing this to larger ones. Of course, fish mucus and skin cells probably at least have some of the nutrients that loricariids...

How specific do you want to be...? The common bristlenose plec species in the aquarium trade is of unknown species, so we don't know where it comes from either, which means we won't know what exactly it lives with. Which means unless you get a particular known species, you won't be able to get fish ...

...I think it's L191? Main assumption is only off of how commonly L191 is sold as an unspecified Royal Pleco. They are right that this yellow color comes and goes on loricariids rarely and randomly for unknown reasons. See Parancistrus aurantiacus for a species that it happens more often in. We've h...
