Re: Callichthyines, how many are there?
Talking about this one, right? Yes. It was this paper that prompted me to start this thread, as it shows the kind of thing I've been thinking for quite a while now. I was certain that we had at least several forms just within what we'd currently refer to Megalechis picta (to my eyes, one of the bar...

Callichthyines, how many are there?
Just thinking aloud really, something that's been in my head a while. I've always had a soft spot for Hoplos and Dianema , and so I take notice of them in retailers, and more and more I'm thinking there's a level of diversity that may be being missed (although a very recent paper covers some aspects...

This will be using the superb HydroJets and HydroWizards from the company who set the aquarium up, Panta Rhei. We had a HydroWizard on test here and it really was the mutt's nuts.

A purist's nightmare, and not something that should be deliberately produced, but still a very bonny (and no doubt characterful) fish to have as a pet.

Re: FRP racking
That racking on the Tenji site is actually all FRP, I know it looks like coated steel but I've spoken with the manufacturers to confirm, cool stuff, can be drilled and bolted to suit. Some of our suspended flooring here behind the display aquaria is FRP grating, but we can't find anyone who can buil...

Re: FRP racking
Hi, no, we're after simple racking/shelving for putting our off-show aquaria on. If you look here http://tenji.com/projects/project.aspx?ID=20 and find the images of the off-show areas, you'll see some images of dark grey racking, it's that kind of thing we're after, maybe not quite so heavy duty, t...

Looking for a UK supplier for FRP racking, we're redoing the research room at work and want to avoid using metal if at all possible.

Re: Collecting catfish in French Guyana
Certainly in the UK, any decent angling shop which caters to match or lure anglers should offer a range of nets with rubber coated mesh (bear in mind mesh size relating to the size of fish you aim to catch). They're designed to prevent hooks getting caught up and also to shake dry quickly, but they ...

Re: C113 or CW038
Where did you get it? The colour is so light-dependent that it's probably easier to refer back to the vendor, they are both enthusiasts' fish and there's nothing to be gained that I can see from selling one as the other.

Looks like a young hybrid sold as Flowerhorn of one type or another. Many of them seem to have Trimac genes in there, this could be Trimac x Melanurus/Synspilus, or some other combination.
Going to get bigger and much more evil.

Re: Mouth Rot, Scarring, or Something Else?
That also looks like the normal damage you get when Angels mouth-wrestle such as you'd expect in the lead up to spawning. I'd never seen them actually lock together, but they do bite and this can result in superficial damage.

Looks at the other clips on there, it appears this species takes the same approach to courtship that I do.
Good job RTCs are not so spawnable in captivity! Makes you wonder whether Batrachoglanis might do something similar.

Re: Air breathing in fish
Thanks. I'm aware of the reasons why freshwaters have more airbreathing fishes, but really was curious if whether there were any bizarre exceptions to the rule, but there doesn't seem to be in this case. Tarpon. Assumedly this gives them the option to inhabit lagoons with lower DO, which means they...

I also picked a cracking pair of these up from Pier, the male has a lovely set of odontodes coming on, his pectorals are all but covered as well as the sides of the head and nape. I find it interesting that there is a gap in the bristles actually on the supraoccipital, makes me wonder what the purpo...

Just means that the "new barbel growth" reaction was triggered in spite of the original barbel not having been fully severed. There's probably a "damage threshold" beyond which the physiological reaction kicks in.

We have njassae "gold head" in with Mbuna. I don't suppose you have a pic of these at all? I'm wondering about the "gold head" It's subtle, they do have an iridescent sheen overall. No pics of the fish here, they're in and out in a flash. Same as the fish pictured on the stock l...

We have njassae "gold head" in with Mbuna, they seem to have topped out at around 4" (I suppose it depends how slowly they grow), lovely plump fish, the cichlids try to drive them off from territories but fail miserably. 4 Synos in c. 100 gallons seem to have plenty enough space, neve...

Re: My Megladoras uranoscopus! (irwini)
As for the niger, once he gets big he will be in a 300 gallon, and then if someone can prove to the owner that he has a tank above 300 gallons, he gets sold. There are a quite a few people in my state that have 1,000 gallon ponds so who knows. You'd be better off making sure that there is a definit...

Interesting display. How is the wood fixed? Larger Hatchetfish or Triportheus would look great in there, bt only if the top is not open.

Those look like the Megaman PAR16 7W jobs we've been using for some months, they're very nice lamps for up to 24" depth. One had to go back almost straight away as it was faulty, but it was replaced without quibble and they've done nicely ever since. Looking at ramping up the power now, apparen...

The only times I can definitely recall this happening was with Leporacanthicus (seen it multiple times, the most notable was a large specimem which gouged out big chunks of sealant within a very short time).
