Is there any reason to believe it's a described species?
The entire area is poorly sampled, and I'd be surprised if there weren't undescribed Synodontis there.

Re: What is this adorable corydoras-looking thing?
I've seen it spelled with a K many times - but not being a cichlid expert in any way, I decided to use Aquatic Republic's spelling. Yes, it's a very common error. For a frighteningly thorough treatment of subject, see: Nomenclatural availability of putative scientific generic names applied to the S...

I think there's an opportunity to press the Brazilian government this summer. As I posted earlier they're hosting the "United Nations Conference on Sustainable Development" , and are probably very sensitive about public and vocal environmental critique. And it's hard to get any less sustai...

It is a very rare fish around here too (Sweden), I have never seen one in a shop. I have occasionally seen claro on the stocklists of various German wholesellers, but I do not know if they're correctly identified.wijnands wrote:I'm baffled really why there's hardly any claro on sale here

Yes it is possible. That's the kind of thing one'd wish the environmental impact study had investigated.Andersp90 wrote:Is it not possible that the L14 and L48 distribution is large enough for some of the population to be outside the range of the slow water?

Re: I told you so :-( Damn Dam
So is the L14 going to disaper? Statistically it's got a 20-40% chance of still existing 10 years after the construction of the dam. Most species probably wont go extinct right away. Species die hard, they usually cling on to existence long after one'd think they could not possibly survive - this i...

Re: I told you so :-( Damn Dam
Has anyone made a list of the species that will be lost?? No, there has been no study on the effects on the fish. The environmental impact study didn't with a single word discuss the effects on anything living under the water surface, and an Independent Expert Panel (pdf) report didn't go in to spe...

Re: I told you so :-( Damn Dam
Does anyone know what the effect of the dam will be? How many km of river will be lost? The entire river will be diverted in cement tubes, bypassing and drying out the entire Volta Grande, a distance of about 60 kilometers. Are we going to lose some of the known pleco species? Yes, several, includi...

Re: Armored catfish wreaking havoc in South Florida lakes
AFAIK none of the feral aquarium fish in Florida have been released by aquarists, they're all escapees from breeders, and have mainly been released either due to floodings or because the breeder went bankrupt and released his stock. In short, they'd all have been free in the Everglades no matter how...

Re: Common garden worm for fish food?
Yes, provided you've not used chemicals in your garden it's an excellent feed. You do not need to clean them, soil isn't dangerous to the fish, but if you wish you can let the worms empty their bowels by keeping them for a day in a container with damp (not wet) tissue paper.

Re: Crossbreeding of L's possible?
The problem with hybridizing isn't just that the original species are eventually lost to the hobby, disappearing in a sea of hybrids (e.g. good luck finding a non-hybrid swordtail or Sailfin molly at your LFS!) but that unless you spend a lot of time line-breeding and back-crossing the hybrids alway...

For the wood cave I'd simply build a box using hardwood planks. I doubt the blue eye cares that the cave is square.
If you're good with a chainsaw a more natural-looking solution would be to hollow out a log.
You'll need to weigh them down with hefty rocks, of course.

Based on those I would definitely say the images we questioned are not Otothyris lophophanes , but are S. guntheri . Yes I agree: it is definitely not lophophanes or any other described Otothyris , and while I still have not seen a verified Schizolecis guntheri I can find no other described fish it...

This was identified years ago by Ingo as Schizolecis guntheri . http://www.scotcat.com/thedarkone/loricariidae/schizolecis_guntheri.jpg I queried the slightly different pattern but he said they show up alongside the 'normal' ones But, apart from the extent of abdominal plating, how can one tell tha...
