I'm not saying you're wrong, I just wondered if you had any trick for identifying Parotocinclus, because I find them extremely difficult.

FWIW I've never had an error, I'm in Sweden. Is there a geographic pattern to who gets errors? Could be that one of CloudFlare's gateways is misconfigured.

No need to ask; Planetcatfish has a blanket permission to publish any of my photos.

EDIT: Oh, I forgot - the fish in the photo is captured in the Rio São João drainage, in the state of Rio De Janeiro.

Re: Otothyris lophophanes or Schizolecis guntheri?

Based on those I would definitely say the images we questioned are not Otothyris lophophanes , but are S. guntheri . Yes I agree: it is definitely not lophophanes or any other described Otothyris , and while I still have not seen a verified Schizolecis guntheri I can find no other described fish it...

I mangled the sentence a bit No no, I did. Sorry about that, I understood what you meant yet managed to misrepresent you in the quote. I've edited it for clarity now. This was identified years ago by Ingo as Schizolecis guntheri . http://www.scotcat.com/thedarkone/loricariidae/schizolecis_guntheri.jpg I queried the slightly different pattern but he said they show up alongside the 'normal' ones But, apart from the extent of abdominal plating, how can one tell tha...

Re: Otothyris lophophanes or Schizolecis guntheri?

I've scoured the literature, and if the crests are as obvious on all Otothyris as it is on our preserved lophophanes then it's doubtful the fish in the cat-elog photo is any Otothyris at all. As far as I can tell Pseudotothyris lacks the crests, but apparently also the longitudinal ridges along the ...

Re: what are some good medications so have on hand?

formalin IS a dewormer, Mike Not really. It has almost no ability to penetrate the body wall of an animal; it is effective only against external parasites (and only external parasites with thin skin, e.g. flukes and ciliates, but not external parasites with a hard shell, like anchor worms or fish l...

Re: what are some good medications so have on hand?

I have peroxide and formalin for external parasites and bacterial infections. EDIT: Also the additives in table salt are completly harmless...

We're talking 25 celsius, slow water movement, lots of plants? Are you OK with a fish which might eat shrimp babies? Must they be from Myanmar?

Glass cats was my first thought, but really your possibilities are near endless, e.g. most rasboras and danios would fit the bill.

As long as no large deposits of Hydrogen Sulphide is suddenly released - or is that another myth? Yes, it's largely a myth. All natural sediments are anoxic, typically the oxic layer is just millimeters to at most a few centimeters thick - yet fish do just fine, because hydrogen sulphide isn't part...

Re: maidenhair fern - how to keep? alive?

Depends on which species, but I guess Adiantum capillus-veneris is the most common in culture. If so it's probably best grown outside, in wet shady areas of your garden - depending on its origin it may be fully hardy (and native) in large parts of the US and Europe. Like many moisture-loving plants ...

Re: Setting up natural cory habitat tank from scratch -- adv

I know that cories prefer water that has a very low flow rate, almost stagnant. Pretty sure that very much depends on species, e.g. these are in stronger current than you'll ever be able to create in your aquarium. Also remember that all the videos are shot during the dry season when flow is at its...

Re: Setting up natural cory habitat tank from scratch -- adv

It's not a problem if the sand goes anaerobic - in fact it's natural and harmless. The worst it can do is make the water smell like fart, and if that happens you've been neglecting your tank very badly indeed.

Well, O. vittatus is almost certainly a species complex - it's distributed from Venezuela to Argentina! - and varies noticeably between different areas. I agree that the caudal pigmentation is odd, and I can't say with any certainty if your fish is a vittatus , a " vittatus ", or an entire...

It differs from normal artisanal fishery in that the return to the community is much greater and that otherwise unfished an...
