How big are they?

The locality of L 427 is not among the locations fishermen are used to go to. Specimens till ~15 cm are very hard to id. Later on L 427 gets almost completely black which makes it easier to distinguish.

Yes you're correct. I knew fishermen don't particular go there but I had to work my magic to make it happen.
It is why?, we don't see them in the market very often. I have all sizes but the bigger ones are 5-6 inches maybe a little bigger.

I will try to post more pictures later on, I just moved them out of quarantine and decided to take a few pics.

The ones in your first post look like a variation of L600s. They are too different than the photos on the L427 page. I think the photos for the L427 page are not the same species. The first one being all black seems unique as compared to the rest of the catalog but the other 2 photos on the L427 page are definately not the same.

I really hope the labs that I sent the pseuda DNA samples will provide results soon! I think it will be the only way to positively determine which ones are distinct and which ones are morphs / hybrids.

I hope I am wrong because it would be very interesting to have a fish that changes that much as it matures!

I am determine to find out more about this unique specie.
Variation of L600? its unheard of but possible. I believe there are many factors for the fish to turn black out of the water and stress could be one of them.
The first picture in the catalog seems a much large specimen than 5-6" inches.

They are! The photographed specimens are a few of the ones we can name as L 427 for sure. With a size of more or less 15 cm they change colour as I said. Specimens which looked like P. leopardus before turn black with orange caudal endings and an orange dorsal tip.

Well, if you had to use "magic", did the magic tell you the origin of the fish? That would make things a bit easier.

Rio Jatapu and I could also use Photoshop or CS5 to make them look more black than what they really are.

your fish are not L 427, but Pseudacanthicus leopardus.
