It seems that L315 is Spectracanthicus punctatissimus.

Nice paper. There is also a number of other L-numbers which are assigned to new species. L363 is now Spectracanthicus immaculatus and L020 and L354 are now S. zuanoni. They also agree with Armbruster (2004) that Oligancistrus is a junior synonym of Spectracanthicus.

This is wrong. Spectracanthicus immaculatus is /.

Agree, immaculatus doesn't match L 363 at all. Unfortunately it is named as L 363 in the paper.

Fair enough. Just going by the paper.

I am working through the cat-elog now making the majority of these changes. Not sure about L197=L269, so have made it confer in the meantime. The "difference" I can see is brown (versus black) "settled in the aquarium" colouration.

From the paper:
Key to the species of Spectracanthicus
  • 1a. Triangle-shaped opercle lacking large eversible odontodes; three anal-fin branched rays.....
    • 1b. Bar-shaped opercle with large eversible odontodes; four anal-fin branched rays..... 2
  • 2a. Ground color of body dark gray without dots or spots.....
    • 2b. Body dark brown to black with small yellowish dots or spots, or body dark gray without dots or spots..... 3
  • 3a. Body with large (similar to slightly larger eye diameter) white spots.....
    • 3b. Body with pale/yellowish, small- to medium-sized (clearly smaller than eye diameter) dots..... 4
  • 4a. Dorsal profile of snout slightly pointed, few premaxillary and dentary teeth (5-8 and 8-16 respectively).....
Note, the text colored red in the key is accurately reproduced from the publication, but I suspect it's a typographical error. There are no unspotted species below this point in the key.
