- First record of a large catfish in the late Pleistocene of Santa Fe, Argentina.
- The fossil specimen has a morphology comparable to extant specimens supported by geometric morphometric analysis.
- In the Carcarña river there are late Pleistocene sedimentary deposits with fossil fishes.
Abstract
A fragment of the neurocranium of a Pimelodidae (LPB 1143), was found in late Pleistocene deposits of the Carcarañá river, Santa Fe, Argentina. In this work, we describe the specimen that we assigned to the extant species Pseudoplatystoma corruscans, constituting the first record of this genus during the Pleistocene. Furthermore, the fossil was included in a geometric morphometric analysis intended to evaluate morphological variation of the neurocranium of the extant species of Pseudoplatytoma of Argentina. The results indicate significant intraspecific variation in Pseudoplatystoma corruscans at the same time that the fossil is within the variation shown by this species. Additionally, the stratigraphy of the Carcaraná and Paraná rivers in the area, was studied providing a solid base for the paleontology and future biostratigraphic schemes in Santa Fe.
