New photo of Corydoras pavanelliae is not correctly ID'd.

Post by bekateen »

Hi Jools and @Coryman,

The newly posted photo of is not correctly ID'd. C. pavanelliae does not have an eye mask.

I spoke with Luiz Tencatt (one of the authors who described C. pavanelliae), and he thinks this is closest to C. parallelus, and perhaps should be considered C. "cf. parallelus."

@Coryman, can we please get your perspective on this? Is there a C# or CW# which resembles the fish shown in this photo:
c133.jpg
Thank you,
Eric

The closest to this species is C133.

C. pavanelliae is a lineage 8 sub clade 4 (straight snouted) species

Hi,

I do agree on this ID, it's extremely close to the original picture in the DATZ magazine.

However, I have to contradict to this statement:
Coryman wrote: 08 Mar 2018, 11:02C. pavanelliae is a lineage 8 sub clade 4 (straight snouted) species
C. pavanalliae is for sure no member of lineage 8. It has a typical pectoral spine of lineage 9 and a short mesethmoid. It is not explicitly assigned to any lineage in the species description but all lines but 6 (paleatus group) and 9 (punctatus group) are excluded. Due to colour pattern I tend to put them in lineage 9 but this needs to be confirmed by genetic analysis.

The cory species of lineage 8 from Madeira basin with this pattern is C. brittoi.

Cheers,

I've been in touch with the keeper of this fish and he may join in the discussion as there is some gaps between everyone's viewpoints. It may be we remove it from C133, I will try to get some locality data.

OK, so the fish in question is from the Rio Madeira drainage. I propose to put it in it's own species entry for now.

Any further thoughts?

I've put juvenile and adult pictures of the same, new fish into a new species entry for now. It's . Main points of note are the fish is a brown base colour, not white and that the eye mask is not strong if at all present.

Hey Jools, just my opinion, but this is C133. I have CW127 a very similar fish from the Tapajos basin. Within a single fish the background color and mask is quite variable depending on substrate, breeding condition, age and possibly even mood. Looking at this photo I feel the fish would fit well within the range of C133. Hope you are doing well and Thanks!
