OK, let's go with the next debate being around S. robertsi!

Sweet little car, Marc. And I would agree with some of it but since I don't know the car, a newer version to compare for me would be the new BMW Z4, small, cute but with more oomph!
This fish has oomph!
Almost a perfect fish. If it was more available,I would call it sub zero.
Colour, size, habit, requirements (ph/temp), feeding, whiskers, all perfect.

I have never found one and the nasty hybridizers have made it so I probably have less chance in the future of finding one. Any fish that is totally unobtainable to the average person can't be sub-zero so Synodontis robertsi is cool

Shame on Jools for posting barefoot, no clogs.

I'd be surprised if we got any uncool votes for S. robertsi, but maybe they're just too cute to be sub-zero ...

If we go back to the original Top Gear Cool Wall - the only car that is sub-zero is one of the Aston Martins & i'm pretty sure this is available to only a select few not the masses -

Robrtsi - is knocking on the door of sub-zero, not sure if it is in the freezer quite yet.

Hmm, maybe I spoketh too sooneth...
There's a few cats I'll never have that are subzero to me.
The aston martin has one problem that keeps it off my subzero wall- James Bond. Men love James Bond but not all women do, kinda says something right there..This is a fish that is not a "guy fish" or a "girly fish", another thing to point it to cool.

However, the subzero wall on motorworld.net has a Mclaren F1. Out of respect for that car, I agree that a subzero can be unobtainable or easy to find.
That squeaks S.robertsi much closer to subzero, but still cool. This time it stays only cool because everyone likes it. That's kind of bland in itself.

It's a 1991 Nissan figaro btw, 20,000 built and originally only sold in Japan. They seem to be popular in the UK, but these are "all" imported as second hand cars.

I can think of at least 20 species i like better.
it's got a nice pattern and it's small, but it doesn't rank up there with the ubercool cats

Tempted to say sub-zero, but would settle for cool.

I would really wish for Synodontis species to get popular like the L-numbers. They deserve just the same degree of fame as l-numbers. Maybe even more.

Not so. If you know what you are looking for, it's quite easy to find genuine fish in the shops - ok, maybe not EVERY shop, but some shops.

And there are Hybrids because people buy these fish.

Not so. If you know what you are looking for, it's quite easy to find genuine fish in the shops - ok, maybe not EVERY shop, but some shops.

maybe in the UK, yes, but not on the mainland

here it's quite hard to get true Syno's. only a few recommended highlevel cichlid specialists carry unpolluted Riftlake Tanganyikan Syno's.
all the rest; hybrid Walhalla with the exception of returned outgrown eupterus and the occasional nigrita/robbianus

if we want to get true Syno's we have to leave the country and even then we better know a fair bit about syno's, otherwise even German shops foist off the hybrids.

I've been to a fair number of Dutch shops the last few months and I know of ONE, yes 1!, that does NOT have hybrids and the majority these days ONLY have hybrids
they're cheaper.....

and ALL those are sold under genuine names. the only shop I ever encountered that was honest enough to label the Tzech rubbish as "Synodontis sp hybrid" was a German shop.
