Aquatic-Discoveries: Suriname Expeditions

In September and October this year, me and three other Aquarium fanatics went on an expedition to the upper Surinam river. During the three weeks we were there we fished and filmed in various locations along the river and the creeks. We caught some very nice species and possibly even a new Bryconops species. Dr. Covain helped us identify the catfishes we caught which was very helpfull since hardly anything is known about the species found in this region. (Many of the pages on PC don't even have images of them)

The Dutch version of the report has already been published on my website: http://www.aquatic-discoveries.nl The English version is currently under construction but you could use Google translate to read it if Dutch isn't your thing (Or just look at the pictures). Our main priority now is getting the other fish species identified for our printed version of the report.

Nope, all the fishes were released after they had their pictures taken. (Except some larger ones that were eaten by either us or the locals)

Most likely Macrobrachium brasiliense

BTW what was the tetra/barb species ( orange fish with spots) at about 43 seconds and again at 3 minutes. I would love to find the name and get some!

That is a Leporinus spec. Maybe L. maculatus.
It's an Anastomid and member of the order of Characiformes. Not a barb,since this family doesn't occur in South-America.

That is the group I was thinking it would be (leporinus) and *DOH* for thinking barb.. LOL it's been a loooonnnng week~!

is Leporinus klausewitzi is one that is similar, but the vibrant orange in the video i am wondering if it is midleading due to the tannins in the water..

That small lepo is Leporinus granti (What's in a name...). They grow to about 10 cm with lovely bright red fins, we found them olmost everywhere. We did not catch any Leporinus maculatus, these species look alike only the maculatus grows to about 20 cm and it is allot less colorued.
