Tank racks

Post by andy75 »

I was meant to be getting my new tank rack a week ago, which was meant to be holding 4 tanks, but was let down at the last minute. :(

So i am now looking at different options, so does anybody know any websites that specialise in tank racks? Or companys in the uk? Or our there any other options that i havent mentioned?

Can't remember the details, but is this for a space where it needs to look good, or a fishroom where "looks is not important"? For the latter, a sheet of 3/4" (18-19mm) plywood, and some 93 x 38 mm x 2.4m timber, at the cost of about £50-100 (depending on size and where you buy) will do a nice stand. Even if it needs to look nice, you can probably get some decorative material to cover the wood and make it look nice, without adding too much to the price - maybe £20-40.

Andy,
Contact a local welder and ask about having a custom stand made. Many welders will have all the needed angle iron on hand as "scrap" and you may be very suprised how cheaply they can make tank stands for. These are lighter than any other material and last longer.
I had a three shelf high by about eight feet long stand custom built for under US $100. Each shelf holds two 20 long and one 10 gallon. That is 50 gallons per shelf for 150 gallons total. A very nice stand to work with and I move it myself when I need to.

cheers guys, muchly apreciated, looks our not that important, will be going into a room where probably only myself and the mrs will go into, unless friends want to have a look.

I have been looking at stands online but i dont think they will be made strong enough to hold 3-4 tanks, i will either have to make it myself or go with shanes idea. My diy skills are not that great so and im not sure i could trust myself making it, and then it collapsing! :x so i might look into getting a custom made one.

I'll take some photos of my wood design - it's fairly simple and doesn't require any more DIY skill than cutting timber straight [and the same length, I suppose] and screwing (possibly after pre-drilling).

That would be good if u could do that, just gives me an idea then. How many tanks do u have on that rack?

Its annoying because i have the space and sort of the time to get this project of mine underway, but there always seems some hurdles in the way..

Each rack has three shelves, with either 2ft or 4ft of space on each shelf - this can be altered to match your requirements. One rack is actually about 6ft long [just over], to accommodate 3 x 2ft and 3 x 4ft shelves, the other rack is 3 x 4ft. In the second rack, I only have four tanks, as the lowest shelf has the sump-filtration system, which is made from three 4gallon "header tanks" for central heating system.

Shane's idea is good too - especially if the tanks aren't that big - I'm not sure I could move a 6ft long, 6ft tall and 18 inches wide rack from wherever a suitable vehicle could get to, into my fishroom [in fact, given where the door is on the fishroom, getting something 6 x 6 ft into it would be a struggle in any way]. But it could of course be made into two different racks, and steel being very strong, it would be fairly easy to move around, as it's fairly light.
