Very strange. Do you know something more than the country? I bet they are not from Paraguay. I don´t wanna degrade you or the wholesaler, but they just don´t fit in the typical pattern and colour range of Ancistrus from Paraguay.

I don't really believe that exists.

Hi,

I mean fish like Ancistrus pirareta and Ancistrus sp. `Rio Paraguay`, this is the typical habitus for species of this genus living far in the south. A. hoplogenys doesn´t live in Paraguay but in Rio Guama, Brasil. Why is it written in the cat e-log? A. formoso is an exceptional case and not comparable to the others as it is living in dark caves where fish don´t show any pigmentation.

I only know two species with white spots on black/dark ground living in this region: Ancistrus sp. "Río Mamoré" and Ancistrus sp. "Cuiaba". But both don´t have a white seam.

Probably because fishbase says so and someone (probably me) used FB to add the information...

Edit: Scientific identification appear to show it "all over the place". Could be caused by lack of proper keys ...

True, not really a good species when talking about typical colour and pattern.

Isn't it possible that A. hoplogenys is wrongly reported from Paraguay because similar looking Ancistrus where found there?

I´d assume this as well, yes. But still wonder which species it could have been as there is no one known in this area looking alike. Correct me if there is!
