S. nigriventis and Boraras species.

Post by Deb »

I want to add about 50 small cyprinids, a Boraras species, to my 55 gallon tank. In this same tank are two Synodontis nigriventis, which are not full grown. The largest is 75 mm SL.

My question is, do you think the synos will eat the boraras? Not "can they" eat them but is it very likely that they will? In other words, is that what S. nigriventis is known for? I don't want to sound naive - I know a fish will eat whatever fits in its mouth, etc., but what I'm really asking here is what is the tendency of this Synodontis in particular towards much smaller fish. The Synodontis are new to me, having inherited them from a friend.
Thanks!

Synodontis are not a predatory fish by nature, so the nigriventris will not actively hunt the boraras, if they're hungry & the opportunity arises & the size difference is considerable it might happen

Some Boraras grow to 15 mm, others to 25 mm

Obviously, with S nigriventris growing to 50 mm, the latter could be OK, while the former could be I trouble. Remember, all Boraras are very low bodied fishes, thus easy swallowed

Thanks to you both for this good information. It has helped me to decide to go ahead with the Boraras. If something notable happens, I'll make a note in the My Fish data. (*)
