new gold nugget :)

Post by andywoolloo »

haven't posted in awhile. Just wanted to say hi and i decided to try another Baryancistrus.

last time i tried a L239 and he didnt make it out of QT. I was very sad and have stayed away from the barrys.

Went to get some frozen fish food and fell in want with a gold nugget. He's in QT. Seems fine, so far, crossing fingers. No sunken belly, not plump but not sunken.

I moved the yellow bristlenose out and into another tank and added him to the QT tank. So he is alone and i can see if he is eating.

He coloured up nice right away. He is a small spot i'd say. Brilliant yellow seams, active around tank and on glass.

I tried zuchinni last night, nada, i will try every night a new piece. Also am offering him sinking algae wafers and sinking earthworm sticks. being sure and remove uneaten bits.

I will get a picture soon.

So hi, hope everyones well.

if anyone has feeding tips for mr brite yellow seams bring them on please. I am just going to rotate thru till I find what he likes.

will have frozen hikari in the mix also

Good luck. Do you know if it was feeding in the shop, and if so, what food?

They are known to "food-strike" after being moved too.

I've always fed my Baryancistrus with "Hikari chips algae wafers", crude zuchini (sunked on a tea spoon), and occasionnally with "green stones". Lately, I discovered the "Nori" leaves (for sushi cooking), bought in chinese food grocery.

the only challenge to feed them, in a non specific tank, is to make sure they have enough food, 24 hours a day... and it's not that easy with other non Baryancistrus mates in the same tank...
the Potamotrygon adventure has begun...

Hi Andy,
How are you going?
I picked up a little nugget a few weeks ago too.
I guess it took about a week or so for it to start eating. They are so shy which is the main issue for me.
I feed them the same as the L239 (of course) @-)

I found that a couple of shrimp pellets along with the novafect got it interested.
Mine has not gone for the Zucchini yet?
The shrimp pellets and the novafect both sort of dissolve to become the fine particles that they can then graze on, rather than needing to find a hard chip. The shrimp seems to act as an attractant to bring the fish in.
I only remove the uneatin food after 24 hours due to the grazing nature and shyness of the fish.

Cheers
Geoff

thanks guys,

Mats, he had been in shop for 2 weeks or so, not long enough i know, my bad for taknig him home, they feed one HIkari algae tab a day they said, he was with one other gold nugget in tank.

he is alone in his tank so should be easy to tell if he is eating, well alone except for some MTS

First night didnt touch the zuchinni except a few scrapes of the skin, didn't eat the hiakri algae wafer, earthrworm stick mostly gone.

Second night, cucumber piece and earthworm stick, cucumber has possible scrapes on it, earthworm stick gone.

today before work i put in some Hikari tropical wafers sinking, the teeny ones, and some defrosted bloodworms and some defrosted plankton (just a few of each)

He is about 2.5 inches long. He or she. Can't tell yet. has some spikes on cheeks but nothing extravagent. Seems to like the wood alot.

Tank is just my QT for now, will be going into 40 breeder. His QT is 82-84 degrees, A 0 NI 0 NA less then 5ppm ph 6.8 - 7

Yeah i thought he d be best alone in the QT so i can watch what he eats, I am very wary of him lol

ty Eltofi! I will add some green stones in there , i have plenty on other tanks, and I have some Nori, thanks!!

Thanks Geoff! I will definitely try the shrimp pellets and defrosted shrimp.

p.s. i am doing fine thanks how are you all?

I cant even remember all the times I took a fish home before they were completely in the clear. Heck, all the discus I have I got at different times but from the same store because they just couldn't give them proper conditions and were on deaths door step. I lost a few but for what I payed for them (almost nothing) I took the challenge.

yes I feel like that alot also, if I do not take them home soon they will perish in the store tank.

Is why i try to order all fish supplies on line! =))

My gold nugget is still here, eating and looking good.

He really went to town on the algae covered stones and he also likes the shrimp pellets and the earthworm sticks. still giving him veg at night, he still, i think, has no idea what it is.

Quite the opposite, actually. They are pretty much the most vegetarian plec around. Have a look at this article.

If it were me, I would limit the addition of lots of new foods at this stage, including vegetables.

I would stick to one proven food, Hikari algae wafers, for a few weeks until the fish gets its strength back and can be introduced to the main tank.

Once settled, I would then try different veggies, and cut back on the wafers.

I'd say when he's feeding confidently, i.e., feeding with the tank lights on, as soon as the food hits the bottom!

I think you'll find he'll be a lot more receptive to new foods once inhibitions are lost.

just looking at this post as i search gold nugget info on the forum

sorry i never put a picture yet , he is still with us and growing nicely!

he eats a vast majority of things but his fav is zucchini skin lol

I need to try and get a picture of him or her. most i see is a flash of him as he darts from under the slate to into his cave as i come in the room! then all i see is his yellow gold stripe on his back tail fin!

he is a beauty tho when i sit in the room and look over i will see him out. i will try and catch a shot and post
