Maybe, or maybe we don't have enough cookie monsters.

Or, as we say in the UK, they're a tough nut to crack and we don't have enough nuts keeping these things.

However, I am old enough to remember when just breeding plecos was an unbelievably tough cookie. We've made amazing progress in breeding plecos in just 25 years.

Oops, yeah, I got my idiom wrong. I meant "tough nut to crack" but I mixed that up with "tough cookie." LOL

And I hope I didn't raise expectations of a breakthrough on this. I was merely asking out of interest. Unless I can get royals to spawn in a 15 gal tank shared with a bunch of busy clown plecos, it isn't happening in my house anytime soon. (see, that's supposed to be a joke since the 15 gal tank is so small)

Likewise, the peristaltic contractions tends to point to male. This is only an observation I've made, but it seems the genitalia of females is usually too bulbous to be able to note if any movement is taking place. I see it in males of most plecos rather often, but don't recall ever noting it on a known female. I don't think it's sexually related, but something that seems to happen quite a bit.
