Plecos Dorsal Fin Shredded-Help!

Post by Lunadraco »

I've had all of the same fish for a few months now, and they have all gotten along fine. But tonight as I was feeding I noticed my larger pleco had the anterior fin rays exposed all the way down to its body. I'm not sure what could have caused it or if there's anything I should do to help it heal. I work at a specialty fish/aquarium store so I can get anything I need to help my fish without issue, but I have no idea how this happened. None of my fish have ever bothered one another, and at ~9 inches, it's the biggest fish in the tank.

1. Water parameters
a) Temperature range: 80-85°F
b) pH: 7-7.2
c) GH: Unsure
d) KH:unsure
e)Ammonia, Nitrate, Nitrite, levels: low
f) Water change frequency: every 1-1.5 weeks
(Most LFS's will check your water and give a list of readings).

2. Tank set up
a) Size. 70 gal
b) Substrate. Small gravel
c) Filtration. AquaClear 70
d) Furnishings. Fake and live plants, large stones, natural and artificial driftwood
e) Other tank mates. 3 electric blue acaras (very timid ones), 2 baby Senegal bichirs, a bumblebee catfish, and another smaller pleco.
f) How long has it been set-up? Technically 5 months, had almost all the same fish in another tank for about a year.
g) When was the last new fish added? Months ago.
h) Foods used and frequency? Frozen bloodworms 4/5 times weekly,
Algae wafers 5/6 times weekly, catfish pellets with wood/etc 4/5 times weekly, rift lake green (herbivore) cichlid pellets 1/2 times weekly.

3. Symptoms / Problem description: Anterior few dorsal rays completely exposed.

4. Action taken (if any): None yet, I've only been aware of this for about 20 minutes.

5. Medications used (if any): None yet, should I treat with voogle, salt? Nothing?

Hi Lunadrao,

Sorry to learn about your fish. Can you get any pictures of the fish?

Cheers, Eric

Sorry Lunadraco, but your image doesn't display. It's because your URL for the image includes a link to your own AOL email, which (obviously) none of us should be able to access.

No, it can't fit behind the heater. The other pleco is the same species but about half the size.
