Super Red BN Illness - please help.

Post by Suckindiesel »

First post but I have been a lurker for quite some time. Having a problem with a new pair of super reds which has left me baffled and I hope you lovely people can help.

1. Water parameters
a) Temperature range. 25 'C
b) pH. 6.4
c) GH. Unknown
d) KH Unknown
e)Ammonia 0, Nitrate 10-20 , Nitrite 0.
f) Water change frequency
25% weekly

2. Tank set up
a) Size 100L approx 30 gallon
b) Substrate- bare bottom tank.
c) Filtration - air driven sponge and eheim pro 3 external- also have an airstone running.
d) Furnishings - various caves, driftwood and a couple of rocks.
e) Other tank mates- 6 guppies.
f) How long has it been set-up - 3 months.
g) When was the last new fish added? 3-4 weeks ago, which were the super reds in question.

h) Foods used and frequency?
Pleco pellets daily, algae wagers once a week and fresh veg nightly.

3. Symptoms / Problem description

They do not seem as active as when I first got them and they have started to change colour around there nose, it appears they are losing the slime coat.

4. Action taken (if any) I carried out a 30% water change 2 days ago going to do another 30% today even tho it doesn't appear to have made any difference.
I have also added almond leaves.

5. Medications used (if any)
None however I have esha exit and 2000 to hand.

Sorry about the poor pictures they are not very photogenic and I Only have a camera phone. Any help would be appreciated I hate to see the poor guys suffer.

What other fish are in the tank? Did you quarantine the plecos?
But if you tame me, then we shall need each other. To me, you will be unique in all the world. To you, I will be unique in all the world..... You become responsible, forever, for what you have tamed.

Hi there Is 6 guppies in with them, and about 3 or 4 guppy fry which have some how survived.

The fish wasn't quarantined, ( I really should get a spare tank for such things).

And the fishes were bought from a local breeder who I have had fish off before and they always of good quality.

One of the super reds have started to fade at the tail, iv treated the tank with esha exit and 2000 as a precaution, but I fear I'm going to lose them.

Nope I didn't think to ask him, and I didn't want to come across like I was trying to blame him either to be honest, the fish were in perfect condition when I picked them up, I may message him and ask if he's come across this before.

I'm convinced it's something in my tank, but I'm not sure what, and If possible I would like to find out what so I can treat and prevent it happening in the future.

When I come to think of it, I did put some plants in from a LFS.

Hi there, the male still has quite a patch on his nose but it doesn't appear to have got any worse, and the female appears slightly better, definetly more active, both are feeding so I'm keeping my fingers crossed.

Still non the wiser about what it is or why it's happened tho.

Even had my water checked by a LFS to rule out false readings from my test kit but they were near enough the same.
