What are the chances that this is a female L204?

Post by Jobro »

I think the title says it all :D
I would like to hear some oppinions.

If this is no female I have only males and I might need to rethink the whole L204 affair of mine.

all the other ones are definitely males, way more hairy and all. But this one is a little smaller and has a higher contrast. No obvious belly though. To be honest it is a little too thin for my taste. Not sure if it is eating well.

I am in need of some more reference material. Especially regarding the vent and the odonthodes on females. If anybody has something to share, I would appreciate it.

First picture is really bad. It looks way rounder than the fish actually is. I messed up and didn't take a proper picture from dorsalview :-(

Sorry to be the bearer of bad news, but it looks like a subordinate male to me. What is the SL?

Cheers, Eric

I agree. My female L204 were much more rounded in the belly.

Yes, I kind of had a feeling :D

the other subdominant males do have a lot more odonthodes though. But only one of them is caving and he is really spicky.

I removed all the subdominant males anyways so I only have this one and the dominant male in the tank. I will see if it shapes up now. But I fear it really is a male...

It is never good to go on pictures of fish out of the water. There is no natural forming of the fins, which serve as a clue for this species. Pectoral fin should be longer and pointed, ventral fins are shaped more straight instead of rounded (for male). Although the fish is a bit to young still and only going on the third picture of the fish's pectoral fin my guess would be male. It is quite common to find only males of this species, females are few. If you do want to make a success of this project you got to stick with it until you find your female ;) It took me a few years :)

We just received 6 very large albivermis from Germany yesterday - all males. :-(

They are for two of my friends, one whom has two females and wants males (they were happy), and one who has a solitary large male. He's stuck with more males now.

Good luck, Eric

I guess I hit the jackpot today.

Snatched this one for 30€.

L204, Female
Was the only Panaqolus in her tank. Pretty big compared to mine. But no Odonthodes:
L204, Female
L204, Female
And here comes the orange spots:
L204, Female
L204, Female
I hope she is ready to make some love :D

After seeing this fish I am also pretty sure, that the other fish in this Topic will turn out to be a female as well.

:happy-cheerleadersmileyguy: From the looks of it, you may be in luck.

If their cave's rockin', don't bother knockin'! :X :romance-kisslips: :chores-mowlawn: (hopefully the visual euphemism is clear)

Cheers, Eric =))
P.S. Haven't bothered to use some of those smilies in a long time - brings back fond memories. :-)
