All 5 are in caves all the time,so i think its 5 males then.My obserservation and some experience tells me that only males are in caves and females always outside caves. Please i want to hear from others what you have observe about your L046 males and females in caves.

Hello JPeterson,

All my female hypancistrus always cave as well, when they feel save and comfortable in their caves. They only avoid caves, if the males terrorize them there.

Pictures on a flat ground are usually better to sex than this.

Number 3, could be female, but I wouldn't go out on a limb on that. Picture just not good enough to tell, for me.

1,2 Male
3,4,5 maybe female, but not sure on either of them.

At that size, a fat male might look like a female. Pictures don't show much of the odonthodes. Not sure if they have a lot yet, anyways.
If I was you I would look at their vents.

here are some good side by side pictures. Text is german, but male is left, female right.

Ok thanks again,i could not see any odonthodes when i look closer to them,i think they need to have more age to see it. But im happy to hear that females also hide in caves sometimes.I was 100 % sure it was 5 males because they was in caves all the time.
I will look at their vents if i can see some difference there.
Thx for the link
