Cory catfish in the DC/Baltimore area

Post by Cory.Rivers »

Thanks so much for giving this a look- I'm a Cory catfish biologist (for real)! I study social behavior and communication. I've just moved to Maryland to start a new research project and am looking for a good source of Corydoras aeneus and Corydoras elegans (I'll be working on an additional species, but still mulling over which one). My research is strictly behavioral, and no fish are harmed at any point (the fish from my PhD were adopted by my old lab-mates and are living in high style). If you had any tips about good aquatic shops in the DC/Baltimore area, that would be great!

Hi Cory.Rivers,

Welcome to the USA! To answer your question, this is a job for @Andrew - He's in the Baltimore area and is quite a catfish-afficionado.

As a fellow cory researcher (professionally), may I ask where you'll be working and will you be publishing? Are you on a Post-doc or have you gotten a faculty position?... or something else?

I'm working on cory toxins. I'm out in California at University of the Pacific.

Cheers, Eric

Welcome to the Mid-Atlantic! Our aquarium society (DC area) has a number of excellent Cory breeders who may be able to help. Perhaps introduce yourself there? www.pvas.com

Thank you Andrew! I will introduce myself over there.

Eric, what a hoot to meet about Cory catfish biologist! I study social behavior and communication- I've published a few papers about social coordination. Anything of yours I could have a look at? The defensive anatomy of Corydoras is one of my favorite things to tell people about!

Other than student presentation abstracts, nothing published yet. Should be something soon. Do you mind sending me a link or two to your papers? If they are found on the major search engines, they are probably already available here as links: Taxonomy & Science News. If they aren't there, then please PM me and we'll fix that. ;-)

Cheers, Eric

I completely agree with Andrew re PVAS. PVAS is having an outdoor marketplace on October 4, so you should be able to get some interesting Corydoras then, or by asking at the PVAS forum. I’ve got lots of CW014 and CW097, and a few others.

The best commercial LFS possibilities for Corydoras are probably House of Tropicals in Glen Burnie and Londontowne Tropicals near Annapolis. I haven’t visited any stores since February, however, so have no idea what they’ve got in stock.
