Microglanis

Post by Shane »

Been about 3 years since I had a good look at these. Taking the pic I realized how much their pattern mimics dark leaf litter over light colored sand.

Would be interesting to compare what habitat all the "bumble bee" catfish live in..whether Asian or South American.

Ones I've collected in India are not near vegetation let alone leaves. It's basically to mimic the varied colour of gravel they live over - of course, it is likely other Asian bumblebees are found in leaf litter in forested areas.

I just finished moving them to a 20 long full of leaf litter and shrimp to eat and hit them with a 50% rainwater change.

Also added a ball of floating plants in case that is a preference.

Really neat little fish. I got one and then purchased 3 more. I only see the three new ones because they're in my quarantine tank and come dashing out into the open areas to grab brine shrimp. I adore them! I call them my little bumbles because they are so frantic when they eat crashing into each other and my two female Midnight cats who are also waiting to go into our 40 gallon. I'm really sad I won't be seeing much of them after tomorrow (moving day). I will probably throw some oak leaves and java moss in there as well. The tank wound up being a South American bio-type with the bumblebees, Midnights, corys, Angels, Hockey Stick Tetras and Hatchetfish.

I have to laugh, I did some rearranging in my 40 gallon and now my big male Midnight Cat and his two ladyfriends are pouting and smooshing themselves in the corner by one of the decorations. It's soooo funny because if you look closely right in between the 3 big cats is one little tiny Bumblebee squished down in the middle! Every once in a while he will start squirming, as if he is trying to move the Midnights (my male is easily about 4x his size) out of the way. Of course, they ain't budging! :YMDEVIL:

My other three "Bumbles" I very rarely see, the first one I put in the tank never comes out, but the other 2-3 smaller ones will sometimes dart out to grab a bite to eat.

Hey SHane, do you happen to know where to find the paper on how to ID what species you have? i just picked up 6, and based on pattern and tail pattern, i am thinking i have atleast 2 species.. but i couldn't remember if that was an indicator or not. My tank is a biocube.. with a nice stumpy wooded section in the middle and planted else where (they seem to enjoy it.. surprised me..)
What's your favorite Dressing~~
