BBC: Octonauts

My young son loves this kiddie TV program. I love it because it deals with new species to science and teaches in that brilliant way of not feeling like your being taught all about the creatures of the ocean.

Species introduced are vent fish, blob fish, electric torpedo rays, giantflying fish, giant squid, orcas, walrus, elephant seal, snot sea slugs, decorator crabs, vampire squid and loads of others. It's top stuff!

Anyone else aware of it?

My daughter sort of likes it, too (I say sort of, because she watches it on the telly, but doesn't make it a point to watch it all the time).

I was reading her an Octonauts book I borrowed from the public library the other day, and it actually dealt with an upside-down catfish (the book that Professor Inkling used to identify the fish even stated that it was a Synodontis nigriventris, although, of course, the fish drawn looked nothing like it).

Yes they are! They make that joke in the show actually. Oddly they use Shellington the (Scottish) Sea Otter for the word play.

The Beeb has decided to release a DVD of the first three series, almost considering them for myself, but actually I am sure the kids will enjoy!

I sought out the book with the Syno reference and it seems these books were the original source for the TV series. Quite a lot (stylistically) has changed. However, ain't it cool to have a catfish scientific name in a book for under 5s!

It is on over here in the US too. My nephew goes nuts for the show often singing to the opening theme music.
