Need ideas for group of Jaguar catfish L. oncinus

Post by Proteus »

As some already know the saga still continues I'm in middle of preparing for a move across the state lines,

I have 2x 6'', thick girls I believe- 1x5'' and 2x 3.5-4'' making it total of 5 L.oncinus (not sure if I'm even right about saying the 6'' are girls to start with) They're my babies, my pride and joy. Sole reason of me getting into catfishkeeping besides the m. payneiis

Selfish of me not want to sell them at all, I kept them by "charging insanely high price for the whole group" I sold all of my major tanks, only down to 10g neglected tank....running with CPD juvies which is for sale! Now I only am keeping the Jaguar and unknown number of emperor tetras in the 110g tub which I intend to keep them in with tons pieces of driftwood.

My issue is I am planning on being a nomad once the family moves, I will be sending all of my furkids with them and stay behind to work and hop around various relatives houses if I'm not at work or at the gym/hanging out with friends and send over money out to them to live on until they secure a job out there then I'll be moving. I'll be leaving the catfish in the pond at the family's hands.

I have little experience with rainwater but that's what I'm planning on using or having my family store tub of rainwater and top off the tub with. (I did trail run and kept the tub with the jags in it last summer 2011, the jaguar catfish all got so THIN! The raphaels(sold) I had got fat, L183s(sold) fared quite well.... Jags were I mean solid THIN, 2 didn't make it making it 7 before now 5. Now they're all got meat and 2 got little plus (maybe gravid?)

Anyone that might chime in as I do not want them getting thin again outdoors. I am hoping the emperor tetras that survives escaping from Jaguar catfish and maybe add moscow guppies (black to escape from predator birds) might do mosquito control and supplment their diet, I'm also trying to get rid of pond snails which I'm plaqued once again with and just do ramshorns, apparently they have taken a liking for ramshorns, and ingore the pond snails anyone with that observation? all of the ramshorns that I decided I didnt want are now "gone" out of the pond again, I though it was the raphaels.

My location will be at my grandmothers house maybe near the trees for shade/security- I'm planning on building an enclosure with screens to keep birds out and raccoons/barn cats and hopefully stray dogs would be detered. My other concern is getting enough OXYGEN, floaters weren't enough last summer, I ended up doing aerator and I'm more worried about doing a heater during cold nights it does sometimes get cold up there in the summer as tons of driftwood is a must for them to be able to hide from predators and provide shelter. I'll be living in the arenac county area just FYI- a 1/2 mile away from the shoreline of lake huron! Beautiful spot! Of course with the casino light (indian casino) would remind me of the city lights which I will more likely not miss.

Would like any feedback? Different idea? Experience with south american catfish and having them in pond in Michigan, (I'm in Arenac area) I'm really up to try something that has a system that's low maintence that the family can't just screw up on. feeding them once every 3 days, topping off with rainwater and when Im up there I'll do the water changes thats needed. I need some type of heater that won't overheat and fare OK in the outdoors. I'm even willing to loan the catfish group to a local hobbyist in the area (in Michigan- Detroit, Flint/Lansing is totally fine) for BAP points if get them to breed and get them back afterwards or just for rent a fish tank for them I'll pay for their room/board and tank running costs and have their food shipped in directly to them if not want BAP points. Right now they're acting like they're spawning 1. The 3 biggest cats always shared the same spot/cave, now suddenly only the biggest one is in it and belly is big as a pingpong while other 2 were caught sharing the same area when I uprooted the driftwood for visual check and to do deep cleaning of the tub. This could also mean that they pigged out on the ramshorns I added 2 weekend ago or is spawning behavior I have no idea, All activity was not seen due to the heaving covering of floaters?

Yes I went off on a tanget sorry about that. 1. pond and catfish ok in the summer for now in that area, what did people do to keep their catfish from getting thin in the ponds?

After I posted, I went back to the fish room to work more on the tub,

I know competely why the catfish all were getting fat/thick, steady diet of emperor tetra fry. I'm talking about hundreds of them! oh my.

one scoop of muck I yielded 10 fry 3 different stages already- no wonder why the cats are being thick right now.

My first tetra spawn. Yay.
