Hi there.

Anyone here currently own or have owned any of the Giant Asian species, Wyckloides,Wykii,Nemurus,Sperator?

Interested to hear of other peoples experiences

I have a small 4inch wyckii that i adopted from a friend that made a huge mistake buying it. They are agressive towards almost everything(including my fingers) but as juveniles they do not display so much aggression towards other hemibagrus.lfs here in sg mix many wyckiis and nemurus in small tanks without much signs of aggression. But ive seen a hobbyist who keeps a 7inch nemurus with big megalodoras and arowana succesfully (so.far)

I have two 1'-1.5' Wikiis and a baby 5" Sperata aor.

I know you've had an aor too or at least some big 2' sperata.

What do you want to know?

Nice Post Victor.
Interesting to hear how they where in the pond together some time & hadnt even noticed each other & then once they did couldn't stop fighting.
Similar experience with my Sperator Ac, they paid each other no attention what so ever & then like flicking a switch I walked into the fish house one day & they where " locked" onto each other - been apart ever since.
Wasn't asking anything in particular was just interested in other peoples experiences.
Seriously considering looking for a Hemibagrus again but unsure what to go for.
Im fully aware of all their potential sizes & attributes and am interested in other people's experiences.

I have 3 H. wyckii. They vary from 11 years to 21 years in my tanks. They are 24",24 1/2" and 26".

They are big but my Wallago leerii are the real Monsters.

there used to be a lfs called Lynwood fish house (in surrey) that had a 2 footer (approx) wykii.

It took 2 people to do tank maintenance - 1 did the maintenance the other kept the fish at the opposite end of the tank to stop it attacking the person doing the maintenance - no ther tankmates were tolerated (8 foot tank)

Great Story Richard! What a brute, I can imagine some poor Saturday lad drawing the short straw for Water change duties for the Wkykii tank!

Well i am now the proud owner of a 8" H.wyckoides !!
Had spoken to a guy since these posts last week @ a retailers in surrey that had a couple of small ones @ £10ea.
Bit too far to travel mind. 3 Hrs approx each way.
Was doing my Monthly stock up on Sunday & had a walk round a few shops & spotted the beast in one of their bottom holding Tanks.
Apparently it had been purchased as small & kept with Big Tilipia.
Started off fine.....as they do & they ended up destroying everything in the tank & then punted round various shops until someone would take it.
Had only been in the shop a few days, offered £30 and the Boss nearly took my hand off, think they where worried they where going to be stuck with it for ages! Alas.....
It now housed for the time being in my 5',18,18.

Well this little brute is the devil in disguise!!
The two of us are having a battle at present....everyday I put all the tank furnishings back in place, heater back on the side of the tank, Re-attach the Internal filter.........and everyday she (must be a women) destroys by best efforts.
I can see this is one battle Im not going to win......

Not a great shot but you can ID what it is & make out the redtail also. The eyes are slate gray but the reflection in this shot almost makes them blue/white.

Hi all.
Yeap i still own this beautiful creature
Doing fantastically well....knock wood.
Seems to have settled down currently as its no longer destroying its surroundings.
Taken out most of the tank Furniture & all that's in there now is a Large Half Clay pipe & a big branch with some Anubias strapped to it.
Feeding very well twice a week on pretty much anything I give it but loves Fillets of white fish & Mascivore (doesn't EVERYTHING!)
Pictures are difficult as the tank is situated underneath one of my heated Ponds & he spends the daylight hours in his cave!
Will see what i can do.

You could always fix a sheet of glass/perspex diagonally in a back corner (gap top and bottom)creating a triangular protected area & place the heater behind it (this work well with an adjacent airstone to help water circulation. You can do this 'in tank' with something like milliput which sets underwater

I'm not sure if they still make this item but I have a LIFEGUARD HEATER MODULE model AF-92. It allows remote placement of the heaters to go in line with a pump using PVC. They were intended for exactly your type of environment where a fish may be able to crack/break a heater.

The heater is in a guard guys, wouldnt dream of otherwise!
The dastardly beast still takes great delight in pulling the whole lot from the side of the aquarium!!
